NWR: For The dog lovers :)

I have been meaning to see post this for a while and just keep forgetting.. Plus I worry it may sound "vendor" ish, even though you all obviously know I'm not one... But this came to my attention via my wive's club and I thought I would pass it along. :)

These are two non-profit organizations that you can volunteer as a "boarder" to help house animals when single AD people go on a det, deployment, TAD, TDY, etc. and don't know what do to with their pet short of putting it in a shelter. I am a "boarder" for both.
They just post about people that need help whether it's a single mom down in San Diego that needs someone to watch her dog for a week while she goes on emergency leave, or someone who is deploying for 9 months. You aren't forced to take a pet or anything, you just can view the information and help if you want and if they are a boarder they can contact you through the website as well to ask if you can help out.

I just thought these were really cool, especially for those of us that don't have animals, or have some space to house one for a bit if something happens. It's definitely not something for everything, but it's still cool to check out and see that there are things like this out there for people, even if you're just curious. :)

What are your thoughts on this type of organization? Have you known anyone that has left an animal with the reasoning of a deployment, move, etc?

That sounds great.  There is a family that has created a bording service where I live.  They keep dogs for people that are deployed.  They will also pick up the pups from the airport if needed.

I have always said that if I win the lottery, I am going to set something like that up.

Crown that's really cool! Yeah I decided to become a "boarder" because we have no pets now but have plenty of space and since I'm always home (just in college) it would be easy to house an animal. It's not really that common to be called upon for help though. I've been a "boarder" for quite a while... I think most people DO have family or friends that can help them, but this is a great program for those that don't.

Hike- Enjoy the reads. :) They are really a great idea. We have a lot of boarders in Washington and California but not many around the rest of the US. You can get more up to date info by "liking" them on facebook.. that's originally how I found out about them. Cool stuff :)

I saw this organization on the news a few months back and LOVE what they are doing, it a bit different but still helping veterans:
They hope to have a "station" in every state!

So need to let DD know this! She and her H are such animal lovers! If they weren't getting stationed out of the country I so would have gotten them a pet pig as one of their wedding presents! When I told them that they were like totally depressed. So guess what!? I will get them one as a "Welcome Back" gift in like 4 years!

This is a great idea! If FI and I weren't going to live in an apt I would definitely do it because I love dogs. Thanks for sharing the info :)

My brother actually deployed about 2 years back and it was on short notice and he has 2 dogs and he used Guardian Angels for Soldiers and the lady that volunteered and took care of his pup for 6 months is now like family to us!!  I call her my Alaska mom.  Great program and if I didn't have dogs already I'd volunteer.  Definitely helped my brother out and we gained a friend :) ...

@ first, yes be safe!!  I fear bears too! I actually haven't seen any since I've been up here.  I just see moose all the time, which is still weird to me.

Eek moose are scary.. I remember when we lived in Anchorage and they used to come hang out in our yard all the time. Instead of calling in "sick" we would have to call in "moose" because if you walk outside with mama and baby, you'll be charged lol. But they are pretty animals :)

That is so awesome that you have had experience with it! I'm so happy to hear that it has worked for someone. :)
