Need more calories...but not hungry?

I'm having an odd dilemma...I've felt really sluggish the last couple of weeks, and after really thinking about it I've realized I'm taking in far too few calories (on the order of 1000 on a good day), but it's not like I've been actively trying to restrict my diet.  I eat when I'm hungry, and I stop eating when I'm not hungry.  I can feel that I need to eat more, my body is very obviously telling me it's not getting enough energy, but I'm so not hungry to the point where I can't bring myself to eat something for the sake of eating it and getting the calories.

I need to find something that packs a caloric punch but doesn't pack a bunch of other awful things so I don't have to force feed myself more than I need to.  Anyone have any kind of suggestion short of downing a Snickers bar between every meal?

Re: Need more calories...but not hungry?

  • You could try making shakes.  Buy some whey powder and frozen fruit, add a little milk or water depending on what you like and BAM calories in a glass.  It's not bad for you either.  If you don't have a blender or don't feel like making your own, you could always just buy Slimfast or another type of shake and instead of using it as a meal replacer have it as a snack or before working out.
  • Have you tried any protien powder/shake things? My mom used to mix them into fruit and yoghurt smoothies for my brother when he was wrestling so he'd get calories. I'd also try adding things like condiments and dressings to what you are eating. Stuff like peanut butter or olive oil has some good caloric punch but not too filling.

  • Nuts, avocados, peanut butter, extra virgin olive oil.  Anything with healthy fats is good for you and calorie-dense.

  • Awesome sauce.  I've never tried the protein powder shakes because I was afraid they'd be terrible.  Knowing they actually, you know, taste good, will make it easier to give those a shot.  Thanks girls!
  • I like what PPs said about shakes. That would be a great way to get in nutrients too. You can use fruit (or veggies), peanut butter, juice/milk, yogurt, ect. Add Whey protein powder to it.

You can add some calories without necessarily taking in more food. Such as:
    - adding a slice of cheese to a sanwich
    - using 2% milk, instead of skim or 2% yogurt/cottage cheese- rather than FF

Don't just grab a snickers. Instead opt for a protein or fiber bar, Clif bars or something like them.

<div>This...</div><div>Plus shakes!  You are probably not getting enough protein with such a limited daily intake.</div><div>
</div><div>Also, try this... PLAN to eat.  Like every 3 hours.  Eat something small and calorie dense.  Set a timer on your phone to beep when you need to eat.  That way you can't forget.</div>

  • Nuts are super easy - quick and high in calories.  I've started taking peanut butter sandwiches for lunch to add a lot of calories without a lot of extra eating.

  • OP that's me A LOT.

FI called me out on it last week. I don't eat in the morning, might have a little snack (like 150 calories or less usually) at some point during the school day and then I'll have my first thing that actually resembles a meal at like 3:30. I'm bad. But I'm not hungry, and I don't like eating in the morning.

So I resolved this week to eat more and surprise the more you eat, the hungrier you get! I find this especially true when I eat something early in the morning. It's good. You don't have to eat a full-fledged meal but you will want to eat. I weighed myself today and I actually lost a pound :)

  • I had this problem last year - I ended up drinking shakes in the morning and during lunchtime to supplement the fact that I simply wasn't hungry.

It easily helped me put 5 lbs back on!
  • Glad to hear I'm not alone in this...I thought I was just plain weird!
  • I agree with the suggestion to add fat. Add a few tablespoons of EVOO or butter (pastured butter like Kerrygold and other European brands have a better nutritional profile) to your food throughout the day. That should add a few hundred extra calories without filling you up too much.
