Non-Denominational Readings

Any suggestions on readings? We need 3 for our ceremony. Right now, I'm thinking about song lyrics from our favorite artists, as neither of us are big into poetry.

Re: Non-Denominational Readings

  • We're using an e. e. cummings poem (we're not big into poetry either, but I love this one):  I hit copy/paste,sorry this is so big.

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)

i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

    - e. e. cummings ~

we're also using 3 blessing to represent our heritage:  an italian one, a polish one, and an irish one

  • We're having two - one religious (a must since our wedding is at my church) and the following (sorry for the weird fonts - apparently copy/paste works in weird ways on TK):

Captain Corelli's Mandolin - by Louis de Bernieres (an excerpt)
     Love is a temporary madness,
It erupts like volcanoes and then subsides.
And when it subsides you have to make a decision.
You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined
Together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.
Because this is what love is.
Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement,
It is not the promulgation of eternal passion.
Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away.
And this is both an art and a fortunate accident.
Those that truly love, have roots that grow towards each other Underground,
And when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches,
They find that they are one tree not two.

  • I'm having this read during my ceremony:
"Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other. Now there will be no loneliness, for each of you will be companion to the other. Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you. May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead and through all the years. May happiness be your companion and your days together be good and long upon the earth."
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • One of ours is from The Prophet, Kahlil Gabrin

True love gives nothing but itself
and takes nothing but from itself.
Love does not possess nor would it be possessed
for love is sufficient unto love.
Love has not other desire but to fulfill itself,
to awake at dawn with a winged heart.
To give thanks for another day of loving,
to rest at noon and meditate love’s ecstasy:
To return home at eventide with gratitude,
and then to sleep with a prayer,
For the beloved in your heart
and a song of praise upon your lips.

Thats the Apache blessing. My mom already informed me she wants to do that reading at our wedding.

  • We are doing this one: Maybe...We are supposed to meet the wrong people before meeting the right one so that, when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift Maybe...it is true that we don't know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we don't know what we have been missing until it arrives Maybe...the happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way Maybe...the best kind of love is the kind you can sit on a sofa together and never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've ever had Maybe...you shouldn't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Maybe...you should hope for enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you happy Maybe... Love is not about finding the perfect person, it's about learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.'
