Living together & registry?

Anyone already have a house with their FI?  What are you guys going to register for?   I mean, we can replace our dishes and stuff.. but we don't need all the linens, towels, kitchen gadgets and whatnot. Doing a cash-money registry doesn't seem all that appealing to me.  In our families, the shower is typically reserved for registry gifts, while the wedding gifts are usually money.  On the website, I'll probably list where we're going on our honeymoon, but I don't want to ask for money or anything like that.  We'll ask for a couple of cool kitchen-BBQ things... maybe a smoker or something.  But i have a kitchen aid mixer with the attachments.  He has everything QVC has ever sold (thanks FMIL).  What else are you guys registering for?

Re: Living together & registry?

  • FI and I live together.  I plan on upgrading our sheets.  I am a thread count snob and possibly getting some monogram towels.  Also I want new silverware and I still need my KitchenAid mixer. lol.  Do you guys have a grill or grill accessories?  Just go through your kitchen drawers and see what is looking a little beat up and could use a replacement.  Also, do you plan on registering for China?

  • Probably not going to bother with China.  My mom's hasn't been touched in 31 years LOL.  We also each had our own places before moving in togetehr... so, not only do we have wine glasses, but we have 2 sets of wine glasses.  I guess we can upgrade some cookware.  And we do have a brand new grill\ and all of the accessories you could possibly imagine.   Sheets are a good idea..... I wish I could register for a new big screen TV and kitchen remodeling!

  • If you have a small registry people realize that you just need money.  Maybe you can get that TV and kitchen! lol.

  • My FI and I are living together and we struggled with the same thing.  We decided that since all of our stuff is a mosh of his and my stuff, it will be nice to have a set of *our* dishes, etc.  We too have wine glasses, but they are from goodwill that I bought when I turned 21 (haha).

It helped us to stop and think, this is the "wish list" of stuff that we would never buy on our own.  This might be snobby, and I apologize, but it might be nice to start your marriage out with your wedding dishes, your wedding glasses, etc.  I would give that a thought, and go with your gut!

  • @tricia - Not snobby at all.  That's kinda how I'm thinking about it, i guess. Nothing really matches, and most of our stuff is "good enough" but even after plates and glasses and silverware... I'm wondering what else there is.  When I tell you we have everything for the kitchen, I mean EVERYTHING. I like thinking about it in the "ours" way though.  That's helpful!

<div>Glad I could help :)  I am a kitchen tool lover too, I have everything as well.  I already have a nice crockpot and my kitchenaid mixer, so I am not registering for things that I could not let go of.</div><div>
</div><div>It certainly helped my FI and I put things into perspective.  It is exciting to start fresh with a new hubby and a new chapter in life, isn't it :)</div>

  • We don't live together but FI and I thought we wouldn't need to register for much but we looked at the Macy's registry checklist and went through everything systematically and realized there were quite a few things we didn't have and something things that needed to be replaced.  Also, once we were in the store we saw a few things we added on(ice cream maker, popcorn maker, air purifiers, etc).  If you haven't seen it yet, here is the link for the Macy's checklist that you can use at any store:

  • I am also curious about this... I never thought of it as "our stuff" either which i will adjust my thinking and look into that. But our situation is a tiny bit differant. I really want new appliances for my kitchen, the house we have was built a long long time ago, and though things are still good, and working i want updated things.  So i was wondering if i can just "register for the practacle things" and then ask for home depot gift cards or something. I worry that in saying we want to redo our kitchen tht would be persumtious that people are going to spend that much money on us. But our grill just bit the dust so i will be adding that to the list. :-)

  • I looked into registering at Home Depot and it works well if everyone lives near the store that you register at because they don't actually have an online or nationwide registry.  This wasn't an option for us because everyone is so spread out.  I think you can register for gift cards through them, though.  Definitely worth looking in to!
  • FI and I already live together and I love to cook so I started asking for kitchen goods in middle school. My high school graduation present was a kitchen aid. I'm not into uni-taskers or super specific items. We also live in a teeny NYC studio apartment so asking for a lot of unnecessary or bulky stuff isn't practical. It was hard to find traditional housewares that we could justify finding the space for, like we have potholders but they are older than me and stained so we registered for new silicone ones and our plastic containers are all from chinese food so we asked for some nice ones. We did an Amazon Universal Registry and have some games and some stuff for our dog on it.

Cryssteen, maybe you could do a Amazon Registry or Sears and put some remodel stuff on it, like paintbrushes and drawer knobs and spread the word for Home Depot gift cards. You could probably register for a tv too, I went in with a large group on a tv for a friend's wedding. You never know.

  • We have lived together for most of our relationship but we've never bought silverware, dishes, etc, so we registered for those.  Our towels and sheets are kind of old (plus we now have a second bathroom and a guest bedroom), so those are on the registry.  We need good cookware and yes, I want a KitchenAid, too.  But we did put fun things on our BB&B one and Amazon registry (like Lego-themed coasters for FI).  And most people know we just bought a house so I'm sure they'll take that into consideration.

  • FI and I have had our house for three years and looked at the registry as a chance for two things.  First we have a lot of little stuff that is fun and we can use but won't spend the money on because we can certainly make due without.  Otherwise it was a chance to get better quality items (like cookware, knives, ect.)

I did find that since we have a lot of the things we already need that it gave us a chance to put a lot of goofy and non-traditional stuff on the registry (like an X-Box Live subscription on our Target registry).

  • Hmm as a 37 year old I don't feel right about a registry. After all wasn't the intention of them to get people started in life???? I already have stuff.... I certainly don't need a bridal shower.

Yeah, we've been in our house for about a year now. We have pretty much everything we need but I am definitely looking forward to starting our registry for new items. Most of our stuff is hand me downs or items from Goodwill. I especially would like to get some nice new linens!

Have most of you already mostly completed your registry? Where are you registered?

We haven't even started, in part because we disagree on where to register. I'm thinking Amazon and Kohl's, but I think he wants to have Target or Walmart because most towns will have those physical stores for the non-tech-savvy family members. A Walmart registry seems kinda lame (altho true I shop there) and I like Target, but have heard horror stories about their registry website and experiences with item exchanges.

  • Same here, had our house for 3 years now. Basically, we're have registries to upgrade stuff. But we also opted to have a honeymoon registry through sandals! When it comes to weddings people like to buy stuff, whether its from your regisrty or not :/

  • We are registering for a really nice set of Denby everyday dishes, somewhat classified as china.  We are also probably going to upgrade our sheets but want to decide if we will also upgrade to a King Bed first lol.

I would suggest not doing this. Just don't have a registry and people will give you money. If you do a honeymoon registry you don't get the whole gift; the company takes a portion out of each item so you are actually losing out on quite a bit.

  • Fi and I have been living together for a little over a year, and a lot of things we either had or bought right before we moved in. We registered for things that need replacing or upgrading. We haven't really done our bed linens, because they will all change in January, but our couch is a pull out, so we're going to register for a matress pad and a set of sheets for it. I have been looking forward to China since I was a little girl, so not only do we have the standard China on our registry, I added all the accessories. And I mean ALL, right down to fancy rice bowls should we ever have a formal Asian dinner. I have a hand mixer, but not a stand, so a Kitchenaid and accessories. And there are a lot of smaller items like the Just Tasting series of cookbooks and some of the dishes. These are designed for tasting or appetiser parties, and I think they're adorable. They're perfect for shower gifts too, because they're not exspensive, and you can bundle them if you want.

After you've done your upgrades and don't haves, you can stop. People will give you gift cards, checks, or random things they like if you have a small registry. Be prepared for the "I'm giving you something I like not from your registry" gifts, they always happen, even when you are registered. And if you register somewhere like Target, Kmart or Walmart, you can register for electronics, including a big TV, and Ipad (which fi and I did), a new camera (did that too), and even BlueRays of movies you have but want to upgrade. We're registered for all the Toy Story movies, Happy Feets, and Tangled on Blue Ray. Registries are so flexible anymore, you don't have to follow a given list if you don't want to.

  • We're upgrading sheets & towels, and getting an entire new look for our bathroom - shower curtain, hand towels, racks, wall art, etc.  We're also FINALLY getting rid of the 2 (his and hers) sets of Corelle dishes - YAHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

We're also doing an amazon registry because there is so much more variety and most of our guests are young and don't mind internet shopping anyway.  I'm going to register for things to do an urban garden next year - elevated planters, gardening books, food dehydrator, canning supplies, etc.

  • sandals adds a small percent service and credit card fee. :/ when i bought an excursion for my friend through her cruise, I dont recall any extra fees or her not getting full credit. my thought is it probably depends on the company. Read the FAQs.
