Snarky Brides

So, a little rant. Thanks.

Apparently FI can't get a day off for our wedding without being fired.  Excellent.  He talked to his boss and said "so, I'm just going to need off a few days to spend with her for the wedding.  I just need the day of and two after that".

His boss said "well if you don't want to come into work after the wedding we will just have to find someone else who wants your position."

Seriously?  So now I don't even get to have my new husband home with me for two freakin days after our wedding.  I'm furious.  They knew since they hired him he was getting married, and when, and it has never been a problem until now.
As if we didn't have enough to worry about with the wedding and finances, now he will probably end up without a job due to getting married.  I'm sorry, I thought getting married was like, one of the two good excuse to miss work for a few days.  The other good reason being you're in the hospital.
Does your FI not get vacation or paid time off? Does his company have a shift trade option so maybe someone can cover for him or switch days off? Do they have a formal time off request policy?

No vacation time apparently.  No paid time off.  He works on commission.  He can trade shifts, but the other guy who does the same job as him is a jerk and won't do it anyway.  They don't get along.  <div>
</div><div>They all acted happy and excited for him until now.  I don't get it.  They knew it was coming. </div>
How long has he worked there? It seems weird that they have no option, even unpaid, for time off. Maybe this is the time to start job hunting.

I agree with Dot.  This is a weird situation.  What's he going to do when he's sick?  Or whatever?  This is not a good situation, and it's ringing all sorts of alarm bells in my head.

How is it even legal to refuse to give your staff even unpaid time off and tell them they will get fired if they take it.
  • That's weird, and I'm no expert on this but I could be wrong, but it seems illegal.  Is there an HR person that your FI can talk with to clarify rules about time off/the process for requesting it?  Or is there an employee handbook he can check?

I'm sorry you have to deal with this :(  They can't possibly expect nobody to NEVER take a day off, paid or not.  What happens if he gets sick?  Or has to go to a funeral? Or has a baby?

  • That is ridiculus!! They cant possibly fire him for taking 3 days off work for his wedding!! Does he never get to take time off work? Ever??
  • My old company did crap like this.  I think he should start job hunting.  It would be really convenient i he could start the new job 1 week after your wedding and then end his job a few days before.  That way he's not taking time off at the new job either.

  • There are red flags all over this job situation. If I were him, I would start job hunting ASAP. People need to be able to take time off from work for all sorts of legitimate reasons; that's complete bullsh!t that there is no time off allowed.

No. Never ever.  <div>He finally got the full time that they promised him when he got hired (7 months ago).  He works 5 days a week for them.  Goes in at 6am, and doesnt get to leave until 9 or 9:30 pm.  And even when he comes home, he is still on call.  So if they need him to leave at 2 in the morning, he has to. </div><div>
</div><div>He is working on loosing weight for the army, so hopefully he gets that off quickly. </div>

Tell me about it!  I got out of the shower last night and he says "so I'm apparently getting fired for getting married."<div>
</div><div>For everyone elses questions, no there isn't really a manager or anything that he can talk to.  It is either his boss or the daughter.  When the daughter tells him something, he gets yelled at for listening to her, and his boss says that what she says is irrelevant.  Then when he doesn't do something she said for him to do, he gets yelled at from his boss saying that she is just as in charge of him as he (the boss) is.</div><div>
    </div><div>It's a lose lose situation.  I can't wrap my head around this.</div>
  • ...uh, exactly what does he do and why the hell is he still working there?

He works for a towing company.  He does the service calls , so basically everything but tows.  Tire changes, lockouts, jump starts, that kind of thing.<div>
    </div><div>And he is still working there because the money is needed. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-undecided.gif" border="0" alt="Undecided" title="Undecided" /></div>

I would definately be searching for a new job now. I would also be going to the labor board on those kind of hours, but that is in canada, i don't know how it is in your state.
I was wondering if this was what he did.  A hundred years ago I was married to a tow truck driver and it effing sucked.  No time off, lots of hours but no OT, boss was an ass, etc. It never got any better.  He moved on to another job after about a year thank God.  Take this as a blessing and help him find something else.
    Posted by Dot Dash
It sucks so much.  When we got together he was doing the same kind of work, just for another guy who was wanting to bring his company here to expand and such.  We literally went out all day and night for this guy.  I went with him because I didn't want to leave him alone for hours at night, knowing he was tired. Using his truck, his gas, his tools, all that crap.  He made great money, at least $600 a week.  But the truck just ate up his pay check in three days.<div>
</div><div>He is looking for jobs right now.  :)  </div><div>Thanks guys, I didn't know if I was just being insane or if this really was a stupid situation.</div>
