Considering skipping the video

Is anyone else skipping the video? Part of me wants to do it, but is it worth it if we just watch it once? We'd rather put the money toward photos and the reception. Is this a bad idea? I don't want to regret not having one when it's too late.

  • We aren't doing a video.  We invested in a great photographer.  You can see photos all the time around your house, but you're not going to watch the video on repeat.  Also, you could always just ask an uncle to pull out his camcorder and tape the ceremony and the speeches.
  • You can't hear your pictures, and you cant watch your pictures.  I'm not going to push my videographer or say its a must.  I am thankful we hired one, your uncle or whoever could do it as well but will you actually hear your speeches or your vows?  I did a lot of research and found a lot of videographers within reason.  I wouldn't have paid the 3 and 4k as some are wanting.

  • Sugarbear, can you recommend some for me please? The ones I've seen are $3k or more

My photographer does fusion photography where they take videos during the ceremony and reception for the important parts (vows, speaches, important traditions, etc.) I thought that was the best of both worlds no long video that we'll never watch but still have those important memories on video.
  • I understand about the budget, but I wouldn't skip if at all possible.  Photography and videography are all that you have when the day is done.  Photos are easily accessible but they can't capture everything.

We went with Dan Shallenberger from Poetic Cinema and we loved him.

Oops! Sorry. They regret NOT having a video. We are doing one because, though I LOVE pictures, I want to be able to hear what people said, capture my grooms reaction when he sees me, see what the guests are doing when Im busy running around, etc. Plus I would love to show my kids "mom and dad" saying their vows some day.

Video was our big ticket splurge. Check out how awesome this guy's work is http://www.studiozfilms.com/jenny-and-jim-cincinnati-wedding-film
  • We chose not to have one, but our ceremony was small and intimate (in my grandmother's home).  It just seemed like overkill for something so small.  But you might want to find a way to do it if your ceremony and reception will be a bigger, more lavish affair.

For really small, intimate weddings or other smaller events like baptisms, I recommend my friend Maurice, who does this part-time.  He does a great job with a straight footage for $100 + $50/hr.  The quality is much better than having an aunt or uncle film it.  And he's super nice, everyone he meets becomes his friend! I would prefer that vs. nothing at all.

  • Clearheavens, I think your friend might have some biz coming his way! Sounds just up my alley... I'd hate to regret not having a video but I don't need a dvd of everything and making it look like a movie so thats cool!
    Thanks for sharing!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!  I've been looking into getting a videographer but the prices are crazy expensive.  Their packages seem more reasonable for my small barn wedding.

  • I'm sorry....but that person's work looks amateur at best.  Cheesy "Star Wars" type effects Incorrect spellings on the site...just awful.  You'd be MUCH better off hiring a film student for the day (who actuallly knows something about composition and camera work).  Have him/her shooting everything and hand you over the footage at the end of the day.
  • OMG...I had NOT even thought of having a videographer! My friend is doing our wedding pics but now that I am thinking about this, I might give that guy that Clearheavens recommended..I would just like the wedding ceremony video for sure!!
