Nervous!

Being that most of you will understand, I am a little nervous. I am getting married to the man of my dreams in about 10 months. We were talking about honeymoons but we might have to post pone going on one because of a deployment.
I'm besides myself. I've made a few suggestions just to run away after the wedding to somewhere close just so we could be alone but don't wanna just sit in a "fancy" hotel room. Being that we live in Wisconsin and the wedding is in November hard to say if there will be snow on the ground or not.

So I just was trying to think of something we could do small after the wedding to make sure we get a well deserved honeymoon before the possible deployment (which will suck big time) Newly married and alone for 15 months EEK!

So up for any ideas that someone might have or has done to make sure we get away before he would have to leave. Thanks Guys!

DH and I had a JOP in CA on a Friday so we just went to a Dodgers game and then to stay in a...interesting...hotel near the shore for the weekend. We also went to the San Diego Zoo. We plan to go on a cruise someday as a VERY late HM. By then it will be just a vacation. We did what we were able to at the time due to DH being unable to take leave. What we did do was probably just a fun and memorable for us as any HM we could have had but that is just personal experience. Hope this helps. I suggest being creative. Idk Wisconsin but maybe you could ask your local board for ideas of where to go? ETA: I think quite a few other ladies have had similar experiences with delayed HMs.

I agree with door county. Sorry Binx, but for me,since I spent my last year of highschool living in the WI Dells, and since that is close to where my parents live,I don't think of the Dells as  a HM spot (then again, my parent are only like 10 minutes from the Dells.so It really wouldn't be getting away)<div> </div><div>What about MN, Fi and I are going to nice place on Lake Superior. We will go on a bigger HM when my health is better and he can get leave, we might go on a cruise or go to Europe. </div>

  • Well Dani, not everyone is from that area. I have always enjoyed vacationing there with my family. Especially Treasure Island, an indoor waterpark.

  • Just do whatever you can with the time you have... I mean.. Being a newleywed and alone for 15 months isn't the worst thing that's ever happend. I'm doing it.. We spent 5 days in a resort town.. I found it through google.

  • My FI and I will be doing a mini-moon after our wedding, and taking out "real" HM around our 1 year anniversary.
    image
  • What about just finding a sweet little B&B for the weekend?  They're often more comfy than hotels.  We're going to Oregon for our honeymoon, and staying in little B&Bs around the state (3-4 nights per B&B, probably 3 B&Bs).  A lot of them have fireplaces in the rooms, and big soaking jacuzzi tubs for 2, and gorgeous views, and amazing food.  Interestingly, they're often more affordable than big hotels.

Check out TripAdvisor for towns within driving distance - when you search for hotels, look for the tab at the top to switch from "Hotels" to "B&B/Inn".

Cabins in Door County or the Dells? Not off-hand, but I'm sure you could easily google something. I like Cali's idea about a B&B, I'm sure you could find plenty in Door County!
    image
  • If I remember correctly, I think Wisconsin has some good wineries and breweries?  Maybe go somewhere and do some tastings!  I love spending a winter day that way!

I always feel like a B&B is its own world, though.  It's my idea of perfet relaxation, even more than an all-inclusive resort in Mexico or something.

  • Congrats from another WI girl (Janesville)!!!  :)  I have never been to Door County, but I've never heard anything but positives about it!  I'm not sure of any specific B&B's or anything, but I've stayed at the Wilderness in the Dells and that kind of gives you a cabin feel in the middle of the Dells...if you like those two ideas!  Also, I'm not sure where you are in the state, but another suggestion could be Chicago.  My sister and her husband went there for few days after the wedding and loved it, and then they went to Hawaii for their 5-year anniversary.  Good luck!

We lost, but it's okay because the couple who I would have voted for (besides myself) got it!  I was really glad for them.

To be honest, I think it'll make a bigger difference for me other couples than for us.  We are lucky enough to have a comfortable budget, and basically anything they could design, I could do, too.  So really, all I have to pay for is printing.  Not cheap, but not even half as expensive as ordering off WeddingPaperDivas or something!

I had a long chat with our mutual friend yesterday, and I totally forgot to mention you guys!  I had called him up to ask about FI's bachelor party, but FI was sitting right next to me when he called back so I told him it was about something else.  Come to find out, he's *hopefully* going to TBS in May, which means he won't be out until right before our wedding.  We're hopeful it doesn't get pushed back and make him miss our wedding, but we'd understand if it did (though we'd be very sad). Like I said, he was FI's bunkmate at OCS, and he's his best man for the wedding!

  • I saw the ones you designed for Binx!  It looks like you would be able to make something so beautiful and unique anyway!  Were they all military couples in the contest?

I hope "friend" is able to make it for you guys!  We are getting married on Sept. 1, so we were pretty concerned regarding TBS dates, too.  Hopefully, neither one of us will have problems with it!  We have to get his FI on here now to plan.  :)  It was so nice at the ball this year, because we were able to hang out and actually know someone at the event.

So your guy is a mustang, too, like our mutual friend?

Yes, I've already sent her a FB message to encourage her to join!  I'll intro her when she shows up, hopefully!

C - Explain to me why there were people on there who were clearly married via a large wedding (their pics were wedding pics). What do they need invites for or did I read their bios/perceive them incorrectly? ETA: I wanted to ask before I forgot and maybe you don't know. I'm also kind of asking because some bios said their wedding was on a past date and said nothing about a VR.

Their Pretty Princess Days, of course!  I'm just glad the 20-year-old who married at 18 when she was pregnant and had been dating her baby-daddy for only a few months and wanted her big wedding day didn't get it.  She definitely had the most votes, but what 20 year old doesn't have like 5000 facebook friends with nothing better to do?!

Anyway, I wasn't even disappointed that I lost really, just glad they picked the couple that they did!

  • Haha!  We were going to.  I'll have to let FI know that he won't be able to be there.  What a popular guy, huh?  These next 9 months are going to fly.

And yup.  FI was in the reserve unit here, and now he's at TBS.  I miss him like crazy, but I know how lucky I am that I get to see him (skpye) and talk to him all the time.  He's wanted to be a pilot since he was a child, so I'm pretty proud of him.  Your FI will go to TBS after law school right?  I hope his processing is quick and easy when it comes!

  • I would find a spa or something with in a few hours of home or even a short flight.  Just spend a few days together.  Go out to dinner, see a movie, get a spa treatment.  Be tourists somewhere.
H and I didn't get to have a honeymoon for almost 3 years after our wedding.  It didn't make it less special.  We still had a blast together.  It was still a great and special time.  You can take a small trip now and a larger trip later.

That's awesome!  Good luck to him at TBS, I'm sure his graduation will be a ridiculouly proud day for you!  We'll defintely go to J's, and I can't wait for my own FI's graduation from TBS!

Wow, so when will he know for sure if he gets a flight contract?  A Marine pilot is a REALLY big deal!  I think there's fewer of them than JAGs, if I remember correctly?  There's only like 300 something USMC JAGs worldwide right now.  Talk about one in a million, huh?

Our schedule is ridiculous - FI graduates law school May 12th, we move out of Miami immediately, he studies for the bar and takes it the end of July (he has opted to take one in New England rather than in Florida since it's easier and we can live with my parents rent-free while he studies).

He has 2 weeks off after the bar, then reports for temporary duty, which will likely be at Parris Island.  I'll move down with him and find an apartment and get it settled, then go back to my parents' to finish wedding planning.  We get married obvioulsy on Sept 1st (yay Labor Day weekend!), then I move down with him permanently.  When he gets his bar results in late September, if he passes, he'll be given a date to report for TBS (likely March/April, based on this year and last year JAGs).

So we've got a long road ahead of us!!! 6 moves between now and the end of 2014 - bring it on!!!!

To the girl who posted this thread - sorry for taking it off on a tangent, please stick around and post more!  I'm sure you'll get a lot out of chatting with these lovely ladies.  They have helped me immensely throughout wedding planning and adjusting to miltary life.

bedandbreakfast.com is an awesome website, I've found some really good deals through them in the past. I'd check out whatever you find on tripadvisor, but there are some awesome deals there. :)

also, depending on what you want to do, I love the vrbo.com site (vacation rental by owner)... you can do nightly or weekly rates, in some really nice places for way less than a hotel, and then you have a kitchen if you want to cook and you don't have nextdoor neighbors (unless you rent a condo).

Cal, I think there are a lot more than 300 pilots in the MC, and in my experience you do sign a flight/ground/law contract so that you're at least guaranteed that, though you're not guaranteed an aircraft, or even rotary/fixed wing. I, for example, am signing a ground application, which is why I eventually decided not to put in an air application. I would have hated (HATED) a fixed wing or tiltrotor assignment, or even honestly a HMM/HMH assignment. In the end, I would have only been happy on one of two helicopters, and I'd be a lot happier with a bunch more ground MOSs. I'd imagine that if a flight contract washes out of flight school they would be given the option to move to a ground MOS, but in this new MC world, who knows?

ES, congrats on your FI's acceptance to and completion of OCS! Hope TBS continues to be a good experience for him, and I hope he enjoys flight school and gets the aircraft he hopes for!

That makes sense!  Still, very elite and impressive.  Even just the physical qualifications necessary to be a pilot are very rigorous.  Thanks for the info - I learn something new every day around here, usually from you! Haha!
