MFP & Sugar levels

Ok Ladies, I know I've sort of posed this question before (not exactly but kind of). I stopped eating canned fruit, I only whole fruit. I eat nothing white (no white rice, white pasta, white potatoes, etc), I only eat whole grains. And I do not use regular white sugar, I have been using Truvia in my coffee, which is the only time I ever add sweetener to anything (I know we're all divided on the fake sugars issue). My sugar levels are consistently way high when I log in my foods on MFP. MFP gives me a daily allowance of 24g of sugar. Even though I don't use any of the above mentioned things I find myself consistently going 10-15 (sometimes 20!) grams over a day. With that being said I do make sure to eat one piece of fruit everyday as a snack, which more often than not ends up being 2 pieces through out the day. I am seeing results everywhere except my tummy and I am worried it is due to these high sugar levels. Today I think I am at 34g for the whole day. I know sugar from fruit is "better" that processed sugar, but really it's still sugar. Any ideas on how to reduce my sugar intakes? Thank you!

Re: MFP & Sugar levels

  • I honestly don't think that its the sugar levels that are keeping you from losing that last "tummy" fat.  MFP, while awesome for keeping track of calories, has many faults,  I know this might sound sacriligious to bad mouth MFP,  But I keep finding many flaws with this app.

Theres no way you can eat more than 2 pieces of fruit and NOT go over 24 grams of sugar.  For a "Fitness" app to tell you not to eat fruit is not only ridiculous, but irresponsible.  Look out for my new post about the calorie estimation I'm about to post

  • I don't know that you really do need to reduce.

Do me a favor, please hop onto SparkPeople.com and set up a frofile over there 9quick and free) and then compare the stats between that and MFP.  I've heard a lot of people lately complaining about daily goal numbers that just seem a bit off on MFP.
  • I do actually have a spark people account, I just don't ever use it. For me MFP has been easier to use. Spark People doesn't appear to have sugar tracking as an option, at least that I have been able to find. I went to select other nutrients to keep track of (other than the pre selected fat, protein, and carbs) and sugar doesn't appear to be an option. I very well may be looking in the wrong place.

I went consistently double or triple on my allowed sugars, so I think MFP's estimates are way low on that. I drink a ton of milk which is a natural sugar bomb, apparantly, as well as fruit. I'd examine what you are eating that is contributing the most sugar. If it's fruit and dairy, I wouldn't worry about it so much. If it's gatorade/vitamin water or your protein shakes, look at changing formulas. But I would also do some research on a daily sugar goal separate from MFP, because mine was just unrealistic.

Yep, MFP estimates are low for most of the nutrients,  including total amount of calories in some cases.  Like I wrote in the other post,  you want to check what MFP tells you calorie wise, and compare it using some more accurate formulas.

BTW Bertke,  Nice Picture!   (I was on the trap and skeet team in collegeSmile  )
  • I am in the same boat. I am always WAY over on my sugar levels, usually double what MFP gives me. I drink milk every day and eat a lot of fruit which is where it mostly comes from. I ended up just changing my settings and taking the sugar tracking off, because it just didn't seem right to me.
