Wedding Gown: How long did you wait?

Hey girls.

I was planning on purchasing my wedding gown the end of April which will be a full five months before my wedding. I waited this long beause I've been trying to save the money. But I'm wondering if this will be cutting it too close?

I know you're suppose to purchase pretty far in advance, and I probably could probably get something sooner but it would be with a much smaller budget; I'd really rather wait and buy something I love. I plan to avoid dresses that will be handmade and need months of tailoring beforehand; but wanted the the opinions of others.

How long did you wait?

Re: Wedding Gown: How long did you wait?

  • Mine only took 3 months when they said it could take up to 6. If I were you I would talk to the bridal shops you want to check out and just see what they say for timing.
  • I found my dress just about 13 months ahead of time. I was planning on waiting to go shopping until about 11 months out but the store where I was going to go had a sample sale and 50% off couldn't be beat.

  • I started looking in June and didnt find one until September. It just came in so 4 months (havent seen it yet). My wedding is in August. Id leave enough time to find what you want. Also be aware that some dress styles get discountinued. So if you have one in mind but just saving the $, id talk to the shop people to find out how long that one would take, or if you could put a deposit on to order and make payment plan arrangement. I just wanted to gove myself enough time say if they completely sent the wrong size or something.

  • I found my dress about 10 months out but ordered it 6 months before my wedding date.  It took 5 months to come in.

  • My wedding is in June and I picked out my dress Dec 2, and it's suppose to come by the end of next month.

My suggestion for you is to start shopping.  Some dresses take a long time to get.  You most likely won't have to have all the money up front.  Mine only asked 60%.
  • It depends on where you want to get your dress. If you're buying a designer gown you will probably need 6 months or more. I just bought my dress for my June 2013 wedding last weekend and the salon said any order 6 months or less had to be rushed (for extra $$$).

  • I found my dress 1 year before my wedding and ordered it then (in September 2011).  It arrived earlier than expected in January and the dress store will be storing it for me until I have it altered in September 2012.

  • I started looking in September 2011 for my June 2012 wedding, but didn't order until a little over 2 weeks ago. David's Bridal told me my dress would take 16-18 weeks (it was a special order), but I just went and picked it up today! Obviously, this is pretty unlikely if you get a dress ordered from a designer to your measurements. It all depends on where you go and who you order from, really.

  • I'm getting married in May 2012.  I ordered my dress beginning of December 2011.  They told me that designer usually took about 4-6 months to come in.  At that point 6 months would've been a little late.  I just got a call last week that my dress is in, which means it took a month and a half.  Seems a little crazy to me.  I'm going in this week to make sure everything is the way it should be.
    Have fun shopping!
  • I've had my dress for over a year already and it's still 5 1/2 months til the wedding. I got it in December 2010 for an August 2011 wedding, but I wound up pushing it back a year. My sister went and got her dress in February and got married a month later, but she had her dress on a payment plan at the store, so they didn't have to order one in. My dress took less than a month to come in, but we live near a distribution center so it was easier.

  • I'm going shopping on Friday to start the process for mine and we aren't getting married for 13 months.  I'm looking at Casablanca gowns and the bridal salon says they aren't shipping anything until June of this year.  She said it can take a minute to get them in so I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • I ordered mine about 6 months in advance and it was ready after 3 months.  However, they messed up on the length and it took about another 2 and a half months to get the alterations to where I felt happy with it.

When it was all said and done, my final, final dress was ready about 3 weeks before my destination wedding so it was really cutting it close.  I would give yourself as much time as possible just in case.  You never know what could happen and the dress is the one thing you don't want to have any issues with.  I know a few other brides who have run into similar issues with the alterations.
  • I am getting married in October and ordered my dress last week.  The shop said that it should be in the first week of August.  The general turn around (for boutiques, I suppose, rather than David's etc.) is 4-8 months.  However, I have heard of much faster times!  Good luck on finding something you *love* that is in your budget!

  • I ordered mine in August and it came in last month. Ask the store how long it would take to come in.  If you wait too long, you might have to pay for a rush order. Do you have to pay for the dress in full? I had to put down half of the cost for a deposit, and then I will pay the rest when I go see the dress.

  • I bougt mine in August for a February wedding. Although the bridal shop said it would take 4-5 months for it to come in, it arrived in 2 weeks!

It wouldn't hurt to start shopping now, just to get an idea of what you like and don't like in a dress.

I just found my dress over the weekend - 6 months to day of our wedding and apparently I am farrrr behind.  We had to rush order it and it still won't come back till the end of April/beginning of May - then there are at least one or two more fittings.  Basically, I'll get it back just in time!

Depending on where you go, you may not have to wait this long.  For example - David's Bridal has actual sizes there so you may be in luck!
  • I ordered mine in August 2011 for a July 2011 wedding. It will be delivered to the bridal salon March 2012.

  • I ordered my Casablanca gown for our June 2012 wedding in the second week of December, and was told I'd need to rush it in order to get it in mid-late April.

I bought my dress yesterday, but my wedding is still 15 months away. It will be ready for pickup about a year before my wedding date. I'm getting all the planning out of the way early though. People look at me as if I'm nuts, but I just don't want to be stressed out with anything in the months before the big day. I figure that way I won't drive my fiance up the wall. I put down a deposit for my dress and I'm paying the rest when I pick it up.

I ordered my dress in September for my June wedding and it still hasn't come in yet.  If its  money issue some places let you make payments on the dresses so they can start on making it.  You just have to have it paid off before you get it.  This is how my mom is paying for mine.  So yea its 6 months in for mine and it still isn't in.

The reason they take so long is because the ones all stores have are just samples that you try on and they have to actually have yours made for you.  Unless you are cool with buying a sample.  I have seen woman do it before buy something off the rack and leave with it that day.

It also depends on how detailed your dress is, the more the longer it takes.

Like I said I would start shopping around and seeing where you can pay month to month, I don't know if 4 months is enough to get one made.

  • I bought my dress in November for my June wedding. I guess mine is slightly different since it's a traditonal Pakistani dress... but most girls still normally order their dress atleast 6 months in advance.

I'd recommend 6 months because of alterations/mess-ups - you should definitely look around and atleast decide the style etc you want... that way you'll have it narrowed down. You might also want to ask the actual stores how long it would take to get your dress... it'll give you an idea of how much in advance you need to order it!

    Good luck :)
