Valentine's Day

So, H and I are having a hard time figuring out what to do for Valentine's Day. I think we both want to keep it kind of low-key, because we went a little crazy for Christmas as far as spending money on gifts for each other. Chances are we will be celebrating the Saturday or Sunday before the holiday itself, because we work different shifts and probably won't get to see each other as much.

Neither of us can think of anything outside of spending the night in and making food (which is what most weekends are for us anyway). We just can't seem to think of anything "special."

Does anyone have any ideas that could help us?

Re: Valentine's Day

  • Do you have a fondue pot?  It could be fun to get some nice cheeses and chocolates and find some recipes to make.  We actually just got Melting Pot's recipe book from Barnes & Noble (Amazon has it, too).  We got a fondue pot as a wedding gift, and once we can get some ingredients, we're going to have a "Date Night In".
  • I think making food together is great...as far as desserts go, these are incredible and easy. I leave out the garnish, and the extra batter freezes beautifully:

I kind of like when people use Valentine's day to include non-romantic love...what about writing letters together to people you love, like grandparents or parents?

Speaking of letters, what if you wrote eachother a letter or note every day until Valentine's day, but don't give them to eachother. And then open and read them all on Valentine's day.

Or pull out your wedding photos/video and reminisce about your wedding.
  • Last year FI made dinner for valentines day...and because it was a special day he really put a lot of effort into making it nice, put candles out, got wine, etc...just to make it that much more special then just a 'regular dinner at home'. He also TRIED to make lasagne which is my favorite....but...lets just say his cooking isnt the best, but it was so sweet i didnt care! Then we watched Happy Feet. I can seriously say it was one the best valentines ever because i didnt have to plan anything or remind him to do anything or worry about how much it was costing, or go to a busy restaurant. So i think its a great idea to have a valentines meal at home, and doing the little extras to make it feel like a special day still really do make a difference.

  • I think cooking together sounds like a great idea!!

FI and I don't do a lot on Valentines Day. We both feel it is a "Hallmark" holiday and think we should love each other the same way we would on Valentines day.

  • DH actually proposed to me on Valentine's day 2010.  So we always try to do SOMETHING special.  We haven't talked about it yet this year, but he'll probably get me some flowers, then we'll probably stay in and cook and watch a Netflix movie together.  Maybe I can talk him into a romantic movie, haha.

  • My birthday is the day before Valentine's Day so we really never do anything for V-Day considering we just had a celebration the day before.

We will usually make dinner together or go out, come home and watch a movie, cuddle, etc. Nothing too exciting.

I agree with the PP that it really seems like a "Hallmark" holiday.. lol.

Posted by sessionswedding[/QUOTE]<div>Hey, that's when we got engaged, too!!  I told DH that he has set the bar too high, so, for the time being, he's in charge of V-Day plans.  We were long distance last year, but he still managed to fill the day with little surprises with the help of his sister.  :)

  • We tend to be a little more low key for Valentine's Day. Last year we didn't really even do anything because we had just gotten married and gone on our honeymoon AND moved me to his place all in the three weeks before. We were partied out!  ;)
We went to the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago, and it was fun, but COLD!
  • On H and my first Valentine's Day together (2009), he came to the townhouse I lived in at the time and made me dinner- heart shaped pizza with heart shaped pepperoni!! He made chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. It was so sweet and delicious and he worked really hard.
