I am appalled....but beware!

I am appalled at some of these other boards on here. I can not BELIEVE how rude some people can really be, specially when they are just trying to help others out and make them aware. You would not believe some of the comments this lady got. Anyways, i thought this would be an important topic to share with you girls. The topic was "be careful with your card box at your reception" (or something along those lines).

Here is what the lady wrote:
"I never thought this could or would happen but at my daughters wedding on October 30, 2010, the card box was placed at the gift table.  It wasn't close to the door or anything.  Even I noticed a young tall blonde man talking on his cell phone while pacing back and forth in front of the gift table. We didn't see it but he was removing cards little by little and placing them on the other gifts on the table.  As he paced, he would pick up a card or two and put them in his jacket pocket. He was dressed like a guest and fit right in. No one gave his a second thought. He was on his cell phone and fidgeting with the gifts on the table. Since he was on his cell phone everyone just thought he was nervous and fidgeting while talking. The hostess at the reception hall FINALLY came and got me. She told me she SAW him pick up the box twice and SAW his hands in the box. Even if he was a guest there was no reason for him to be touching the gifts OR the card box. The hostess failed her job in not stopping this thief or letting me know asap.  My suggestion is to have a locked box in a secure place. The box can disappear so securing it to a table is a good idea. Hinesight, I wish we would have placed the box at the head table in full view.  There are 20-30 cards missing containing thousands of dollars. Another thing I learned is that I'll ALWAYS write checks just in case. Most of their cards contained cash.  I've made it my mission in life to tell alert everyone that this can happen. I've also notified the photographers in case this thief shows up in a background shot, we'll have his picture. We're making a police report and I will do everything in my power to see him arrested. I'm sick because I saw him by the table and I should have thought it strange.  Please be aware!!!!

That's crazy, poor lady.  That happened recently at my sister in law's wedding.  The only card we know for sure was stolen was ours, but more so because my FI is a bit wedding-tarded and didn't know what the cardbox was for so he put our envelope on the table not in the box.  Figures!

Oh wow. That really is horrible.  I hope people opt in sending money via my online registry.  I will have to make sure I have someone by the box for a good bit during the night of my wedding.

Wow!!! People are getting really desperate these days. This is horrible!! I am never giving cash at a wedding again!

Thanks for the post - it will make everyone more vigilant and aware.

I've heard of this happening at other weddings, but not by strangers, rather by family members or friends... in other words.. guests!

I did not have a card box, or cage or anything else because 1- I really didn't expect much since we had gotten so much for our shower and 2-because in the chance we did, I didn't want them to go all David Copperfield and disappear. :-)

Much to my surprise as we walked around saying hello to everyone, I got a card from almost EVERYONE! I didn't want a purse or bag, but my mom brought one without me knowing. I passed the cards over to my grandma since I knew she wasn't leaving her chair and who guarded them with her life.  :-)

So my suggestion would be to collect them personally, it's a bit more "personal" that way anyway and hand them off to someone who you trust and will guard them. Do NOT give them to your mom or dad, since they too will be under the "wedding spell" and be kinda loopy like you will. :-)

P.S. Other boards are "the dark side". You should NEVER go to the dark side! LOL

It's funny you mentions this now, a coworker warned me about this just yesterday. I'm going to have a friend overlook this the entire time, or the bartender that will be close to it. I dk I am getting scared maybe I should change the location.

We had stuff missing from our wedding. We're still not really even sure what we're missing. We know for a fact that its atleast 2 cards with close to 1k in them. It was all cash too. We've spent a lot of time since our wedding calling around to see if people got us something and its gone or whether or they didnt give us anything. Its been very uncomfortable!

Tiff - I LOLed at your "wedding-tarded" term

I've been thinking about this too ever since Karen posted about her cards going missing. People are so ridiculous; no class and no conscience!
It sucks that on top of all the things you have to plan, purchase, and worry about you also have to worry about your cards being stolen at your wedding.

Lol, I would argue that the "dark side" does not include the budget board or the DIY board, those ladies are very nice. The others can be a bit scary!

I wasn't planning on worrying about a card/gift protector, but maybe I should?

I agree that people in many other board are rude, except here! I tend to avoid those boards...

That's appalling! I was thinking of buying a card box from Etsy but now I'm not sure if we should have one. Still, people might just place the cards on the gift table instead of handing it directly to us. Would it be rude to post something on our website in the gift registry section, letting people know that if they choose to give us money at the wedding, to write a check and hand it directly to us, in order to avoid any theft?

Lynette: Sorry I took so long to reply. Here are some of the things they told this lady:

-"Calm down. The hostess did her job just fine by alerting you. You didn't say that she saw his hand in the box multiple times or whether or not she waited an extended period of time before telling you. I applaud her for making sure she was certain as to what she was seeing, otherwise she would run the risk of accusing an innocent person of theft. You also didn't state whether or not it was her job to be watching your gift box.
Furthermore, most venues are actually not responisble for lost or stolen things, so check the fine print on your contract.
I think it goes without saying that you should use checks and not cash. Also, most wedding gift boxes aren't big enough for hands to reach in and grab things out of, I'm surprised this one was.
And, not for nothing, but if this random hostess noticed him taking cards out of the gift box, then how did no one else notice a stranger taking cards out of the box? I would thank her for being so observant."

    - "Was the hostess paid, or just a guest roped into the job?  Because if she wasn't a paid staffer, then she can't be blamed for not working, since none of the other guests had to.  I'm sorry you have to go through this, but when someone gets given one of those bullshit "honor" jobs like hostess, you can't expect them to put their life and safety on the line to interfere with a criminal.  What if the dude had been armed?"
