Just Engaged and Proposals

Did you get your ring appraised?

My FI bought my ring at Robbins Brothers, a popular engagement ring store in California.  He got it fully insured through them.  Do you think I need to bring it somewhere to get it appraised?  If so, where do I take it?  Just another jeweler?

I attached a link to the video of our proposal, in case anyone is interested.

It was a pretty risky move on his part...I always told him I would say "no" if he did something like that!

Re: Did you get your ring appraised?

  • No, I didn't.  However, I'm thinking about it b/c the ring is a family heirloom, and I want to get the diamond serialized.  I also think it's important to know the value to insure it properly.  What does anyone think about Diamond serialzation?
It seems ike a good idea in order to protect an important piece of family jewelry.
  • I know you have to go to a certified jewlery appraiser, which every jewler is not.  I looked into it briefly for my own ring, but am dragging my feet.  My engagement ring is my grandmother's engagement ring.  It can't be replaced as far as I am concerned.

I think it's probably a good idea to do, though.

I have not had my ring appraised yet, but it's on the list of things to do.

I watched your video--I would have been mortified if my FI had proposed in such a public way!   Very sweet, though!  Congrats!
  • FI bought my e-ring from a local jeweler and they provided an appraisal with it.  However, I bought my e-ring online and it only came with a certificate of authenticity.  So I took it to the same jeweler and paid them $35 to appraise it.  Definitiely worth it IMO -- I feel a lot better knowing it is insured should something happen.  Granted, a replacement ring might not be as meaningful, but you also won't have to spend thousands of dollars should something happen....

  • When we got my ring insured we had to have proof of appraisal.
  • I got my ring appraised, but I had to. FI bought my ring overseas and wanted ME specifically to get it done. My jeweller charged 45$ and it was def worth it!!

I say get it done, that way if anything happens to it, you can get it replaced.

  • Our insurance required it.

I've heard less than great things about insurance through the store.  I would take the printed policy to whatever company you use for other insurance and compare what they would offer you.
  • We got ours appraised by our jeweler and insured through a rider on our renter's insurance. However, FI wants to get an independent appraisal at some point too. We need to have it appraised every year to keep the insurance up to date.

  • I believe Robbins Bros has closed in some cities, so you may want to reconsider insurance through them in the event that the company closes completely.

I didn't know renter's insurance covered rings too.  I carry renter's insurance, only because it makes my car insurance cheaper by $40, even though I live with my FI and don't pay him 'rent'.  LOL.   Thanks for the tip.  I'll look into that

The renter's insurance itself won't cover it, but you can get a rider for "valuable personal property" insurance, which covers specific items above the maximum value covered by your regular policy.

  • I WAS AT THAT GAME! lol seriously tho, my boyfriend and I were laughing because I told him 'Don't ever do that to me.' But it's so funny that you're on here too. Go figure! Congratulations on your engagement!!

Anyway, don't really have an answer to your question 'cause I'm not engaged yet...but I saw your YT video and couldn't help but reply. Hehe.

  • I did have mine appraisesd.  It is my great grandmothers ring as is the only thing she brought to the US with her when they fled Ireland in the 1890's.  Although it could never be replaced I felt that it was very important to have it insured.

Also, it seems like alot of people on here have family heirloom rings.  We found a jeweler that specializes in heirloom jewelry and I would definately recommend it for anyone with an older ring.  I think our jeweler loves my ring as much as I do.  He always gushes over it when I take it in for something and does all of the work right there in the store because he doesn't like sending them away (alot of chain jewlers actually mail your ring to their central location, do the work and then have them mailed bak to the store).  We had to have 6 of the platinum prongs replaced (I am a 3rd grade teacdher and kind of hard on my ring) and you absolutly can't tell they are replacements!
  • I have my great grandmother's wedding ring and band, so my mom got it appraised a year before I was even proposed to.  It was only 90$ at our jewelry shop in the city.  It is important to have, especially if you lose it.  Our guy took hi-def pictures of it, so when I called to get an estimate on replicating the band for the other side they just looked at the pictures they had taken.

  • I would definitely get your ring appraised, and by an independent certified appraiser.  If you go to www.pricescope.com they have a list by state of independent appraisers.  The one in my area will charge me $150 for my ring, but I feel like it is worth it to get a totally unbiased appraisal.  I also will get a detailed plot chart of the "defects" in my diamond.  Also, if your ring is GIA certified, it should already be laser engraved.

  • Not yet but it's certified. So in order for State Farm to insure it on my Personal articles policy, I have to show certification or an appraisal for replacement value. The card got lost in the mail so now I'm waiting on the second copy of it.
