June 2012 Weddings

Am I the only one.....

Who thinks that it is absolutely CRAZY to order a dress in a smaller size, hoping that you lose weight to fit in it???

I was just on the getting in shape boards and it is heartwrenching to see all these women trying to lose weight in order to fit into their gowns. I guess low self confidence and the media pressures have gotten to a lot of women.

I do understand trying to tone up and be in the best shape of your life for your big day when all eyes are on you, But, serioulsy ladies, be happy with who you are....Obvisouly your FH is happy be with because he is with you and is marrying you!!!

Re: Am I the only one.....

  • I dont understand it either.... why put so much pressure on yourself? Your FI asked you to marry him because he loves you, not because he wants you to lose weight! Sheesh!

No, you're not the only one.  The wedding dress and the wedding shouldn't be used as an incentive to lose the extra pounds.  The real incentive should be to be healthy and to continue to lead a healthy life style.  Dresses are meant to be bought for the size you are and not for the size you hope to be.
  • If you are on the borderline of a smaller size, I can maybe see it. Especially if you've had experience with trying to lose weight in the past. But these girls who have never lost a pound in their life and think they can drop 3--40lbs in a year...crazy.

Yeah. I don't get it either. But, to each their own. I think the thing that kills me is these ladies that are already a size 2 and are pushing themselves to be skinnier.
I ordered my size, actually I ordered WAYYYYY too big. I ordered a plus size and I am not a plus size. So, I knew if I gained weight, I would be okay. It still fits like a glove.

    ETA:
I can also say that FI thinks I am gorgeous and still wants me in all sorts of ways even though I have gained about 40 lbs since we first met two years ago. (I have medical issues that don't help weight gain issues.)

  • I agree. I have read horror stories were the girls don't lose the weight and they have to pay more $$ to rush a new size in or get an entire new dress in.

I dont think it matters what size you are starting out at. I wore a size 2 jeans before I started Insanity.. I was so out of shape, I hadnt worked out since I had my son 4 years ago. I have lost 12 pounds, but I am much healthier and stronger than ever before. People are different sizes and it doesnt matter if you are a size 2 trying to lose that last 5 pounds, or a size 22 trying to lose weight. Size just really has nothing to do with it..... you should order teh size you are and then get it altered if you are able to lose the weight.

This is the truth! There is a different between skinny-fit and skinny-fat.

Ordering a dress size too small is just silly. so silly.

  • No, not the only one for sure. It just sets sets you up for disappointment and way too much stress.

  • My mom was going to do this and thankfully I was able to convince her otherwise.

I'm actually annoyed though because we ordered my dress in "my size" (based on my measurements and the manufactuers specifications) and when it finally came in it was way too big (even with a corset back). I've lost MAYBE a pound but definitely not enough to elicit a "OMG this is wayy too big" from my dress consultant. Dress sizes are screwy.

I ordered my size even though I was borderline and could have went with a size smaller but I feared that my dress would come in and it wouldn't fit!

as far as weight goes, I've always struggled with weight and have never really been happy with my body. So yes, I'm dieting and going to the gym to lose weight and so far I have lost 18 lbs but I wouldn't really say its just for the wedding. I feel like I'm always trying to lose weight.

ETA: my BF/BM who is getting married in October ordered her dress a size smaller and hasn't lost any weight since and now that her dress should be here anyday.. she is freaking out that it won't fit!
  • I heard someone on a show once say "I am buying the dress to fit me, not the other way around". It totally stuck with me and I approached dress shopping with this mentality. Yes, I am plus sized but FI knows it and loves every inch. I hit the gym when time allows in an effort to be healthier and get in better condition for babymaking :P

Oh no no. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I just meant that it kills me that ladies who are in shape and are skinny and think they aren't. The body image insecurities is what I was referring to. I just didn't clearly state that!

Exactly! I definitely ordered the size that worked and am doing what I need to do to lose weight. I did not even think to order a size smaller so seeing posts about brides and bridesmaids doing this surprised me! We do have a MOH who tried to do this. She is pregnant and due in August. Our consultant suggested a size dress based on what her being 7 mos. She was not happy with the suggested size and ordered a size smaller. Welp needless to say my consultant asked if I minded if she adjusted the size anyway. I let her know I had no problem with that! The dress came in with the bigger size and I'm assuming my gf did not even notice! I haven't heard anything about it yet and that was over a month ago!

  • I wish I had gotten a smaller size. I didn't even pay attention to what size they were ordering because they were measuring me. They ordered a size bigger than the sample because that one was "stretched out" even though that one was big on me too...so I have to get it taken in a TON now. Oh well, it's a good feeling knowing they have to make it smaller.

I do feel really bad for those brides. It's just one other thing you realy don't want to have to worry about for the wedding.

  • Nope, I'll never understand that or the obsession people have with the darn number on the tag of their clothes. I'm a size 1 but I am completely out of shape.

Something else I don't get, ordering dresses in different sizes related, is my BM who ordered her dress in October hoping to be pregnant in June.

Exactly this; I am working on that whole getting in shape thing though!
  • I ordered my dress 1 size smaller with hopes of fitting it to lose weight... however I had been losing weight already. May 2010 I was in a car accident that left me immobile for 11 months and I gained a lot of weight. Since my injuries are finally doing better, I've been working out more and more to lose weight. I was a 14 when I went dress shopping and I ordered a 12 (with a lace up back that had a LOT of room). The 14 was "kind of" baggy on me in spots, so I opted for the 12. I've lost another 9 lbs since I ordered my dress and 4 inches off of my waist. It fits me great now and I'm glad I did it -- but I didn't start losing my weight to fit my dress, I'd already been doing that. I will never understand those who lose weight to fit their dress if they hadn't already been losing weight beforehand. My BMs thought I was crazy, but I knew that I wasn't at my goal weight yet, and I'm determined to be healthy. I don't care about my size number or even my weight in lbs. I care about feeling good, and that's what I'm doing :) I'm really glad I ordered my dress a size smaller.. the 14 would've never fit right.

  • I almost ordered mine a size smaller but I am so glad I didn't. I bought it last March and I was afraid I would lose weight in the year and 3 months before the wedding. Thank goodness that I didn't because I am the exact same size I was. I think that ordering a dress in a smaller size can make brides feel worse about their weight. Most people want to lose weight and while a wedding can be motivation for it, if you don't lose the weight and don't fit into your dress, it makes it worse. Not only did not not lose the weight you wanted to but you now don't have a dress that fits.

I'm not happy with my weight but my dress fits perfectly and really flatters my body. I feel great in it. If I had ordered a size smaller and didn't fit in it right now, I would feel mroe crappy about my weight.
  • I see a personal trainer once a week to work on toning my body. I had gained about 30 lbs last year and wanted to get it off. I told him I had a wedding but had time to see how the weight loss went before I ordered my dress. He told me that was good that I was waiting to see how the weight loss went because he had another client who was getting married and ordered her dress 2 sizes smaller. He said that put a lot of pressure on her and on him to try to get her where she wanted to be. I lost about 8lbs before I ordered my dress and that was the size I ordered at. I knew I could get it taken in if I were to lose more but it fits great and I love it. I would have been so depressed if I had ordered it to what size i hoped to be in.
  • I have this issue with my BM's right now.  One of them waas 6 months pregnant when she got pregnant, normally wears a size 2 clothes but ordered a size 8 dress because it was her first child and she didn't know how her body would react.  Great, smart move and she's back to her size 2 already.  Another BM that should have ordered the sample size 8 that fit her perfectly ordered a 6 despite everyone telling her to order the bigger size because it's easier to take it in.  Yeah, she hasn't been to the gym at all.  I am going on Friday with them and another BM to try on their dresses for the first time.  Should be interesting, but they are both open to swapping if need be.

My dress, on the other hand, is a bit tight.  I ordered in July when I am at my thinnest throughout the year and tried it on at the beginning of March.  I needed to lose about an inch and a half in my chest.  I am hopefully going to try it on on Friday too since I think I've lost a bit.  It will also help me to work on a timeline with the shop of when I should come for my first fitting.

</div><div>Something similar happen to me. The sample size fit but it didn't zip because the zipper was broken. Then when they measured me of course my chest measurement was the larger size, waist and hips measurement was a smaller size. I went with the larger size to be on the safe side. I knew I would be working out and trying to lose weight but I wasn't going to risk it. So now that's why I'm spending so much money on alterations but I feel like it would have been a lot worse the other way around.

  • Sadly, I'm in that same boat. The dress I bought back in September was a sample sale. It was exactly what I wanted, but it was too small. They assured me they could let it out and even put a corset in it if need be. I figured that would be fine. I didn't account for holiday weight, and then I got a job in an accounting firm (I'm finishing my masters degree in accounting) and didn't think about tax season weight. I now have what shoud be my 2nd fitting next week, but I'm going to have to start from scratch. (I do plan on losing the weight, but it's not a gamble I'm going to take.)
  • I would be scared...
I kind of had a whole different situation. I bought my dress at a consignment store where most dresses come straight from the salons. many are sample sizes and that's what fits me more or less. the one I ended up falling in love with fit just like a glove. I mean, 0 alterations needed.
and then I started fearing that I might put on or loose some weight haha... well, it turned out to be neither one. my petticoat has a spandexy top that in any other case I would have loved but now it has made my dress to be just a tid bit too loose around my ribs. totally didn't expect that. however, I have decided not to make any alterations because then at least I don't have to fear putting a poud or so on.

  • I agree with you.  I don't get it.  Yes, I know people want to lose weight often for their wedding but I feel like that is one way to just set yourself up for a disaster.
    image
  • I'm really worried about my dress coming in (that's right - it's not even here yet!!!).  They ordered to my "biggest" measurement but my measurements were all over the map - 3 different sizes.  And the one we ordered was only 1 size smaller than the sample which was huge on me.

I have a feeling it's going to need major alterations.
