NWR: Asking guests to wear something

If you're attempting to have a themed party and hoping your guests will dress to fit the theme; it is rude to list that on the invite?

Re: NWR: Asking guests to wear something

  • Is this for a wedding or just an everyday party?
  • It's a Kentucky Derby/ Cinco De Mayo party ...

So we were thinking something along the lines of:
"Guys grab your polos and seer-suckers and ladies get your dresses and hats out for the fiesta"

    or

"Pop on your derby dudes (or just pop your collars) or your favorite sombrero".

It's not really required; but we thought it'd be fun to have people dress up; especially derby hats.

    (NWR = Not wedding related)
  • I think it's okay for a more casual party to either say "Grab your sombreros" etc.

If you want to make a slightly more formal statement, "guests are invited to attend in costume"
  • I like the second option -- it's more clear that it's derby OR fiesta. The first is a little confusing. (And yes, I know NWR -- I just didn't see it there. Sorry!)
  • We've done it for Christmas Parties (break out your ugly sweater).

I think it's fine for a party like you're describing. People who want to dress up will and those that don't want to won't.
I know I'd do it..but then again, I want to have a Derby party specifically so I can make a hat!
  • I would. I like the options you listed.

Honestly, I would put something like that on there so guests know people WILL be dressed up. If I got an invitation to a Kentucky Derby party, I'd be unsure if others would be dressed up or not and probably wouldn't myself. Putting that on there lets me know I wouldn't be the only ones dressed up (because even if other guests aren't, I'm assuming you will be).

Good point;  I am excited to find and/or make a hat!  (Essentially the food and drink of the party will primarily be Mexican since that's easier to appease people; but I still want to dress up for the derby).

    Thanks all!
