Cake or cupcake tower?

Hey ladies hope you're all doing great : my question is are you all doing a wedding cake or anyone having a cupcake tower? I'm torn between the 2 and really don't know which one I want I want. I guess I need to start calling different bakeries to get estimated prices for a cake and get the price from my friend for the awesome cupcake towers he does! He already told me that he'll give me a good deal so that's awesome. We definitely want to do the traditional bride and groom cutting the cake but how would that go if we had a cupcake tower? Decisions decisions! Also anyone having a dessert or candy buffet? Our venue has ice cream as dessert but my same friend that does the cupcake towers also does candy and dessert buffets and strawberry towers! Yum yummy! Sorry for my crazy rambling but figured this is the perfect place to come to with this :

  • I know I'm going to do a cake, but I guess Im more traditional. You could always do a small two tier cake to cut and then have the cupcakes for your guests?

  • Hmmmm now there's an idea : I'm just debating on which to do cause I would like to do some of the traditional wedding stuff and not sure if we do the cupcake tower if our guests would see that as not being traditional. If we do the cupcake tower think I'm going to do what you suggested. Thanks for your response definitely open to all opinions and advice that's why I love these boards!

  • I am definetly going for a cake too. Although I think cupcake towers can be fun I feel that a cake fits better at a wedding, of course that's my personal opinion. I think if you do go for the cupcake tower, then it would be great to do a small cake on the side that you can cut :)
We are doing a chocolate fountain with tons of fresh fruits for the dessert. The venue specialises in cutting out flowers, birds, baskets and stuff in fruit so I think that will look gorgeous and taste delicious.
  • We are doing mini cakes and a little wedding cake so we can take to top tier home for our one year anniversary!
  • Our original plan had been a small cake for cutting and a cupcake tower, but the cake design we found is gorgeous, so we're going with the traditional cake.

  • We went through the same thing. We decided to do cupcakes on a tiered stand and at the top have a small cake for traditional cutting purpose. My friend makes beautiful cupcakes, plus we get to have more unique favors and assortment than just a traditional cake. She also said she would make another little cake for us to freeze for our one year if we wanted. It saved a ton of money so def talk to your friend and see what kind of design they can come up with to make it more your style.
  • We are going the cake route.

If you chose cake for the wedding maybe you could do a cupcake tower for the rehearsal dinner.

  • Cake comes with the wedding package.  Our venue includes all food.  I love cupcakes but I personally like cake at wedding better for a more traditional vibe.
  • I want a tie dyed cake... But now I am thinking I may do a small cake and have the same baker for the cake do sheet cakes in the flavors we choose and just have a really small cake. I think 5 a serving for cake is insane. Around here it seems 4.25 to 5 a serving is the going rate for wedding cake. And although I want a cake I don't want to spend that much on something that will be demolished in a few hours

  • Thanks for the replies! You guys rock! Once I find out the price for a wedding cake we would like I'll make the decision to either go with the cake or the cupcake tower. If it weren't for us being on a budget and paying for the whole wedding on our own I would for sure without a doubt go for the traditional wedding cake.

  • DMoore I feel the same way!! I know how pricey wedding cakes can be and with us paying for everything it just seems like alot of money for something that will probably have alot of leftovers!! My friend does really pretty cupcake towers and candy and dessert buffets so if the cake is way too pricey for us I'm gonna just go with the cupcake tower and a small cake for us to cut on that day : My friend also does a mini cake on the top layer of the cupcake tower to take home and freeze for our one year wedding anniversary!

This is how I feel as well.  We're doing the traditional cake.  But when we met with the bakery they said if we wanted we could do just a few decorated tiers for the display and then have extra cake for all the guests made with the same flavor back in the kitchen to cut down on price.  So, if price is the main factor there are ways to have the traditional cake and still have it not be expensive.  We were able to have the cake without this option but it was good to know it was available.
