Going to my first dress appointment soon... terrified

I've been dreading wedding dress shopping for this entire week. I'm a street size 14 and I'm utterly terrified that there's not going to be anything my size except "fat girls dresses". I'm going with my mother, sister, and best friend, but I'm getting total cold feet about it.

  • Seriously, do NOT worry about it! It's actually quite FUN!! :) I'm a size 20-22, but some dresses at the wedding stores aren't "true to size," so I came out with a 24! I wasn't shocked at all - I knew they'd be a big snug! David's Bridal, for ME, I found, is VERY good about having super gorgeous dresses - and I totally totally love the one I bought! It's a fun time and you know what? People are going to be oohing and ahhhhing over you all day - make the most of it, b/c you're going to be fitted with the prettiest white dresses - some flops and some freakin' gorgeous - but either way, take hold of your princess-ness today! :)
  • Here's the one I got - David's Bridal! :)

  • I'm a street size 14/16 and I will say, I had great luck with some salons and horrible experiences with others.  My suggestion is, unless you are going to David's Bridal, which will have some plus sizes for sure, call ahead.   Ask them how many samples they have in your street size.  One salon I went to said they had "a bunch" of plus sizes, and they had two.  Another I went to had at least 20 in different designers.    You will not end up with a fat girl dress.    Be prepared for size craziness. If you are a street size 14, you will likely be in a 18/20 wedding gown.  Don't let that upset you.  Size 4 girls are in an 8/10 and it makes them just as crazy.

Consider looking at Mori Lee or Alfred Angelo plus size collections. They are gorgeous.

This is my dress. It's a Mori Lee.  Pardon the horrid facial expression and lack of body shapers (need spanx) and still need alterations.  This is when I picked my dress up.

  • It'll be okay... I was so scared the first time too - I had a wonderful experience at an Alfred Angelo signature store - they have surpassed all my expectations and more as far as customer service, dress selection and now my alterations... they made everything fantastic.  Remember that a good bridal salon wants you to look great... they want you to feel beautiful in your dress -that is their business and one bad review can ruin a place! :)

  • I got a Mori Lee dress. Their plus size options are gorgeous!

  • i got a maggie sottero, i loved so many of her dresses online so i found a local salon that carried her gowns and made sure to ask that they carried some plus sized gowns to try on. i wear a street size 16/18. i tried on many gowns in a 16, they were snug but i was able to decide on one! then to eliminate some other styles and be sure i loved the one i ended up with, i went to davids bridal which i know carries many sizes, and tried on at least 10 other dresses, some were very beautiful but none beat the maggie. dont be worried, it should be a fun time! i will say trying on so many dresses can be exhausting but its worth it when you find the one. good luck!

  • I went to my local bridal boutique (which I LOVE! btw if there is at least 1 plus size gal who works there they darn well better have a decent selection of curvy gowns.) I ended up with an Alfred Angelo and when I looked on their website I had to scroll through every photo twice because I didnt recognize my gorgeous dress on the stick of a size 0 model they had on their site. I LOVE my dress so much and it looks way better on me that the model. :) and its super comfy.

Dont be afraid to make appointments at all the bridal shops nearby even if the first one or 2 you go to have no selection of pretty dresses in your size, someone has to so dont give up early on! :)
