Help Please!

We are trying to make Bora Bora but am having trouble finding what we are looking for in our price range. If that falls through, we will be looking at the carribean. If we go to the carribean we are looking to stay on an island with amazing food, possibly an AI but maybe not. We would like an amazing resort with a gorgeous beach and nice pools. We would like an island where we can go off of the resort with some shopping, excusrions and nightlife. Island suggestions and resorts please!

Re: Help Please!

  • budget? time of year?

  • 8-9 nights beginning of May, not sure on budget but probably up to 8k including flights

  • I think anything under 10K will be tough in Bora Bora - I know a couple that did it on around 10K, and were really unhappy with their experience (the basic costs of the honeymoon were so high that they ended up not having any funds left over to partake in the usual "luxury" experiences that you think of when you think of a honeymoon).  I think your money would be better spent on a week at an ultra-luxe hotel in a closer location, but that's just my personal preference.

  • I have been to the islands a number of times and it can be done on a tighter budget as long as you are flexible. I don't think you'll get 8 or 9 nights, but consider splitting your time between Moorea and Bora Bora. To save on costs, most people stay in a garden bungalow in Moorea and an OWB in Bora Bora. Also, definitely scale back on what resorts you are looking at. If you just have to have an OWB, consider a standard OWB at the Pearl, an OWB at Le MaiTai (a 3.5 star property, but right on the lagoon), or a luxury OWB at the Sofitel Beach Resort. You can also consider an OWB at the InterContinental Le Moana but using the free boat shuttle to visit the Thalasso's spa and restaurants. You can literally take the shuttle over to the Thalasso everyday if you want! If you want a resort that is more upper tier, consider staying in a hillside villa at the Bora Bora Nui. Keep in mind that your flights will take up a lot of the costs- Around $1200/person from LAX to Papeete and $500/person for interisland flights. If all else fails, definitely consider visiting Moorea only or perhaps Moorea and Huahine. they are similar to Bora Bora in that they have large peaks and are lush, but you will save on airfare costs. You can even take a ferry to Moorea. The good news is that May is still low season, so as long as you go before June 1st, you won't get the high season price increases. May also offers one of the best values in that the weather will be great, but the prices are still somewhat low.

    HTH!

  • Uh Oh- I didn't read all of your post when I originally replied. If you want shopping and nightlife, DO NOT go to French Polynesia!!!! Everything shuts down around 9 or 10pm and shopping consists of a small village area that you can get through in 10-15 minutes. Plus, everything is super expensive. I love FP and go often, but when I go, I do not go expecting to be up past 9pm (nor could I make it that long after being out in the sun!) nor do I expect to spend any amount of time shopping. The market in downtown Papeete (main island of Tahiti) is great for souvenirs, but I usually only spend 1-2 hours there at most and it is not a very upscale place. Expect tons of people, no air conditiioning, and having to use XPF (local currency) and not CCs.

  • It sounds like you'd like Aruba or maybe PuntaCana in the Dominican Republic - I have heard the nightlife is better there.  Also, for $8K in either of those places, you could have top-of-the-line luxury.

  • Look into the couples resorts in Jamaica, or an AI in St. Lucia, you could do both luxuriously for your budget and would still have spending money to splurge on excursions, shopping, etc.
  • Grand Cayman has some AIs as well as night life.  When I was there last I was out every night.

  • I would suggest any Couples or Secrets resorts really...
