Tuesday Questions :)

You know the drill...

1.  Are you happy with your weight, trying to lose/trying to gain weight?  Would you say you've usually been happy with your weight, or has it been a frequent struggle in your life?
2.  Do you exercise often?  What types of exercise to you tend to do?
3.  Do you think looks or health motivate you more when it comes to healthy eating and exercising?

Re: Tuesday Questions :)

  • 1.  Are you happy with your weight, trying to lose/trying to gain weight?  Would you say you've usually been happy with your weight, or has it been a frequent struggle in your life?
I have been trying to lose weight for a year or so, but I'm still not where I want to be. Weight was never a struggle for me until after college. I went from a size 0 to 12/14 in about 6 months (50 pounds).  Then I lost about 40 pounds and kept it off for a year or so.  Then suddenly I gained a ton of weight rapidly again, and have been trying to lose it.  I have to keep my efforts under control, though, because when I try to hard I end up all depressed.

    2.  Do you exercise often?  What types of exercise to you tend to do?
I try to work out 3-4 times a week.  I definitely have weeks where I don't work out at all, but that's not the norm.  I prefer Pilates and yoga, but I'll throw in a little kick boxing in here or there.

    3.  Do you think looks or health motivate you more when it comes to healthy eating and exercising?
Looks definitely motivate me, but it's more about how I feel.  Not health exactly, but more that I hate feeling heavy.  It's not like I'm thinking about my heart or blood sugar, but I definitely hate feeling jiggly or swollen.  It's uncomfortable, I guess.

  • 1)  I am happy with my weight... but I know I'm in really awful shape!  I used to be 20+ lbs heavier than I am now when my doctor attempted to "treat" my PCOS with the pill and it took me all of college to get back to my normal weight.  That was achieved primarily through limiting my carbohydrate intake and sleeping more regularly.

    2)  I don't exercise often at all and I should... I prefer cardio like biking, elliptical and hiking as well as occasionally ultimate frisbee and dodgeball.  I'll do some strength training occasionally, but not as often as I should.

    3)  I'd say that health is probably my primary motivator.  Since I'm TTC... I'd like to be in good shape for pregnancy and the sake of future baby.  I also get horrendous tension headaches pretty frequently as a result of my poor posture and lack of upper body strength, so I need to work on that, too.
  • 1. Are you happy with your weight, trying to lose/trying to gain weight? Would you say you've usually been happy with your weight, or has it been a frequent struggle in your life?

I'm happy with my weight, although not my overall level of fitness/being toned.  I've been lucky to inherit my mother's petite frame and fairly good metabolism, so even with very sporadic exercise my usual weight is only 6-7 lbs heavier than I weighed my freshman year of college.  Weight hasn't really been a struggle for me, but I know I'm not in the best shape and even with a little effort I could make a difference in terms of endurance/stamina as well as seeing some difference in being more toned.

    2. Do you exercise often? What types of exercise to you tend to do?

I go in spurts with being really good at exercising, or really slacking (currently in a slacking phase due to being so busy wiht the wedding).  When I do exercise, I enjoy jogging, walking, elliptical, that kind of thing. FI and I have a fitness game for our Kinect that we really like, but it's such a pain to rearrange the furniture in our small living room every time to use it. I used to never run but in the past few years I've run several 5Ks and 10Ks, and am really hoping to run the half marathon next May. I know I can't train for it alone (tried and failed) but I *think* I have FI convinced to train with me, he has done one about 6 years ago.

    3. Do you think looks or health motivate you more when it comes to healthy eating and exercising?

Combo of both - I definitely care about how I look, and certainly get discourage swimsuit shopping and vow to become better about my diet/exercise.  However, I know that I feel better when I'm eating better and exercising, and really want to make a healthy lifestyle more of a priority so it's already in place when we're TTC and so it's something we can pass along to our kids

I know, I'm totally that annoying girl.

    1. I'm okay with my weight. I only ever weight myself at doctors' offices. I'm one of those people with really fast metabolisms who has a really hard time gaining weight. I've really struggled most of my life with feeling skinny, people assuming I'm anorexic, finding clothes that fit, and people who don't think I have an eating disorder assuming that my life is perfect because I'm thin. I've mostly come to terms with it, but it felt good to gain weight well when pregnant, and I'm happy with some of the changes pregnancy left for my body (ie the ability to wear pants that don't come from the juniors department).

    2. I'm horrible about exercise. I walk at least a couple times a week from September to April/May when the weather is reasonable. My arms are getting toned from lifting a 12lb weight one million times per day. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />

    3. I'm motivated in large part by health. I want to be a healthy weight to take care of my family. At the same time, I try to eat well, because I firmly believe that I can harm the inside of my body with bad food, even if the harm to my outside seems minimal.

  • Biblio, I used to be super skinny, so I know what you mean!  I used to get annoyed that people felt like it was perfectly acceptable to tell me I was too skinny, needed womanly curves, etc., to my face.  In HS and college, I would eat probably 3000 calories or more a day, and I was TINY.  At one point, I could only shop at stores that carried size 00/XXS, because 0 and XS were too big.  Imagine my frustration going from that, to size 14, all in the course of a year or less.  I'm pretty convinced it's hormonal.

I'm already eager to hear about your health diagnones, but this has me even more fascinated. There is definitely something going on with you. I can't imagine how frustrating that kind of weigt gain would be -- for anyone.*hugs* and *prayers* for you.

  • It's SO annoying!!!  Although I'm certainly concerned about my fertility, and would REALLY like to regulate my cycle some so that I have more "green days," I have to admit that a large motivation for me to go through all this testing is so that FINALLY a doctor will figure out what's up and I'll *hopefully* drop some of this weight.

  • 1.  Are you happy with your weight, trying to lose/trying to gain weight?  Would you say you've usually been happy with your weight, or has it been a frequent struggle in your life?

Other than when I was a kid and my body suddenly started making changes, I've been fairly comfortable with myself. I did have times where I gained a little more weight and I'm not as happy, which I've since dropped...but it's never been enough to need all new clothes. I'm lucky that any weight gain goes pretty evenly everywhere, and my waist is narrow, so it's not too obvious if I have a little extra on me.

I tend to have to go up a size in pants to fit my hips/thighs/butt. There is a 10 inch difference from my waist and hips. I don't think size really matters so much as being healthy and fit. Dancing has given me strong core muscles and legs. My arms and upper back could probably use some strengthening to even myself out.

    2.  Do you exercise often?  What types of exercise to you tend to do?
Irish dancing is the only kind of exericise that I get during the week. In early college I was dancing twice a week, and practicing a lot, so I was slimmer then.

I hate gyms, and I hate running. I battle shin splints and asthma. I much prefer dancing. I think I would like Pilates or Zumba.

    3.  Do you think looks or health motivate you more when it comes to healthy eating and exercising? I'd say for both.

My biggest motivation right now is that I lost 3 inches off my waist during lent when I gave up cakey foods. I got measured during that time for my wedding gown. I put two inches back on after some Summer Milkshakes, but after watching my snack intake, and eliminating my lunchtime Snapple, I'm now an inch from my Lent size. So I should be fine. :)

  • 1) I am confortable with my weight. But for me it's always been less about how much I weigh and more about how my body looks tone-wise. I was super athletic in high school and first two years of college and that helped alot. The last ten years, even without that level of exercise, I've managed to maintain that same weight/ look.

    2) I wish I could exercise more than I do- which is hardly ever. Multi-joint arthritis and a hip replacement really limits me in my ability to exercise and even more in which exercises I can do. That being said, I LOVE to swim, and it tones everything and hurts the least.

    3) I have a lot that motivates me to try and stay fit. From a very young age, I've had crazy high cholesterol. It, heart disease, and high blood pressure run rampant in my family. That i've managed to keep heart healthy and have pretty low-range blood pressure is really good, but the worry is always there.

I wish looks didn't motivate me but it does. I've watched my mom and my sister struggle for years with being overweight and having a poor body image, and I really don't want  to ever have to deal with that.

I'm okay with my weight.  I could stand to lose a few pounds, and I have some clothes that are getting tight, but I'm certainly not an unhealthy weight.  I've also always been fairly skinny, and the older I get the more out of shape I get.  I'd really like to just get back in shape.
    2.  Do you exercise often?  What types of exercise to you tend to do?
Not as much as I should.  I like to run.
    3.  Do you think looks or health motivate you more when it comes to healthy eating and exercising?
Definitely health.  I joked with a friend that all the pictures on Pinterest of really hot fit girls were not motivating at all -- that I need to see pictures of grossly overweight people to motivate me!

  • Fun fun! 1. I should lose about 15 pounds to be in th "healthy" BMI range, but I'm overall feeling pretty good with where I'm at. I was about 40 pounds heavier in college and lost a bunch while I was studying in Scotland for a semester. I guess having to walk everywhere helped out :). I also am at a net loss of about 10 pounds after pregnancy, childbirth and nursing. Seriously, if anyone is on the fence about breast feeding when you have a baby, it is a great weight loss technique! 2. Do I exercise? Hahahahahahahahaha (breathe) hahahahahahahahah. I used to swim several times a week. During pregnancy my doctor had to force me to walk everyday. And I still like to walk, but I rarely do. I do chase children around all day so I hope that counts. 3. A bit of both. Mostly any motivation I have anymore is for healthy babies /pregnancies (no, nothing in the works right now ;)). And also so my doctor isn't disappointed with me :)

  • 1. Are you happy with your weight, trying to lose/trying to gain weight? Would you say you've usually been happy with your weight, or has it been a frequent struggle in your life?
I am miserable with my weight.  Ive gained 55 pounds since college, with 25 of them  just since i went off the pill in early 2009.  i dont know if coming off th pill is what made me fat (the docs say going ON the pill makes you fat, apparently the pill made me thin?)  or the stress of marriage and a major job change.  i am technically obese on teh BMI scale (31).  :-(

    2. Do you exercise often? What types of exercise to you tend to do?
This is why im annoyed.  I golf, usually walking and carrying.  I hit the gym an average of 5 times per week usually doing 30-45 mins of cardio and then weights. i should not be fat.

    3. Do you think looks or health motivate you more when it comes to healthy eating and exercising? Looks. Vain, i know, but i really get sad when i look at all the beautiful clothes i used to be able to wear and the high heels that went with them.  i do enjoy my wine tho, but otherwise i eat healthy - fruits, veggies, beef just once per week, no junk, no soda, etc.  other than wine i dont have that one thing that i can give up and drop 20, like a fast food habit. when ive given up alcohol for lent, ive seen no change in my weight.

<div>1. I am not happy with my weight. I tried to lose weight earlier this year and lost about 15 lbs. Unfortunately, I am a stress-eater and I haven't found good ways to manage my stress. And then we moved, and now we are getting married this weekend SOOOOO hopefully I will be able to better focus on healthy eating. </div><div>
</div><div>This has not been a constant struggle for me. I grew up with bad self-esteem so I always felt like I was "big" even though I was pretty skinny. I really let myself go after high school and now I am paying for it.... </div><div>
</div><div>2. No, I don't. I chase two kids around and try to keep a clean house. I'm hoping to start and wake up about an hour before the kids so I can carve out some "me" time before the kids wake up.... so far it hasn't happened. :/ If I do exercise, I like to walk, or do some cardio on the WiiFit or Kinect. I think Kinect is enough of a workout :P </div><div>
</div><div>3. Health motivates me more. </div>

  • 1.  Are you happy with your weight, trying to lose/trying to gain weight?  Would you say you've usually been happy with your weight, or has it been a frequent struggle in your life?
I have been trying to lose weight my entire life.  My dad called me Fadeb (Fat Debbie) and my mom was constantly hassling me (and still does).  I was at a good weight when I got married the first time, but gradually added the pounds.  Managing a McDonald's didn't help or having a MIL who was a fantastic cook and baker.  I was at my best weight after the birth of my 3rd child, but once again it all came back.  I lost 40 pounds in the past 5 years after being diagnosed as diabetic and while being unemployed for 2 years.  I started gaining it back when I went back to work and got married, but that additional weight has come off.  I still have 65 pounds to go.

    2.  Do you exercise often?  What types of exercise to you tend to do?

I try to go to the health plex 3 times a week before work to do water aerobics, but it has been very difficult the past few weeks.  I also try to walk, but H has been complaining about his legs hurting.  I am just going to have to do it without him.

    3.  Do you think looks or health motivate you more when it comes to healthy eating and exercising?
Looks used to be the reason, but since my diabetes has worsened over the past 6 months, health is definitely the motivator.

  • Calypso, that's so frustrating, isn't it?  Sometimes I feel like there's no point in exercising or dieting, because I can't seem to lose any weight.  But when I'm not tryin to lose weight, I somehow gain.  It's this constant struggle.
