Cost of alterations?

Hi Ladies,

I was horrified by how much my alterations are going to cost, although they have a lot of work to do (taking it in 4 inches all over and hemming it from the top). Some of the gals on my month board told me to bail on the store and find a different seamstress but I know that this area is more expensive than most places.

What are you paying/did you pay for your alterations...and where did you get them done?

    I went to Fashion Dream in Arlington (search for it on Yelp). It is a mom and pop alterations store, but they did a great job. When I was there, they had a ton of weding dresses in the shop, which speaks for their experience in alterinfg this very important garment. I had my dress hemmed, bustline take in a bit and bustle put in for $300. Price will vary greatly depending on detailing of the dress. It would've been $450 at the bridal salon. Generally speaking, you can get a better price at an independant seamstress, just make sure to look at reviews from customers to ensure the quality of work.

    Check out Angie Cavalero (in NOVA) or Estee Livioco (in Gaithersburg).  We used Estee, and our total was a little over $200 for two dresses and two veils.  They always get top ratings, and their prices are much more reasonable than the salons.  Here is a link to an article with contact information.

    Hello
    In general, if you get your alterations done from the store you purchased your gown from,
    1) the seamstress has the experience on  THAT  particular dress
    2)  If more fabric is required, or lace or beading or buttons from that designer, the store where you bought it from can get it EXACTLY for you, usually at a minimal charge
    3)  if you get your alterations from an independent seamstress, make sure it is a real business and not a home hobby  they will be insured and bonded if anything should happen and not disappear overnight

    4) Bad or inexperienced Alterations on a gown can ruin a gown, don't take a chance to save a few $$, not worth it!!!!!!

    We, at Toast and strawberries, tel [202] 723-9007 for over 20 years. we are located inNW Wash,DC ..we can give estimates over the phone. Need less than 2 weeks to finish.
