when to wax

i have never had a bikini/brazilian wax before, so i would like to know how far before the wedding it should be scheduled?

Re: when to wax

  • I would DEFINITELY reccomend getting a "try out" wax far before the wedding. Just so you know how you adjust to the pain and the after effects.

In terms of getting one done before the wedding, generally waxes stay "looking good" for about 3 weeks. So maybe a week is a safe bet?

Also, I've heard that you should not get it done the week before or during your period, because it makes it hurt worse. I also have heard that you should let it grow out about 2 weeks before you go in (yes ew, I know, but the wax needs something to stick to)

Make sure you take a pain killer like Advil about a half hour before you go get it done. That should help some.

And ALWAYS check for recommendations for places to get it done. Can't stress that enough.

  • I got married on a Friday and went the Wednesday before for my wax. That gave it time for redness to go away. Csweaney gave great advice above. Recently I tried the "cold wax" and found it to be less painful than traditional wax. The 20 minutes of discomfort are totally worth it, especially if you are honeymooning afterwards in a warm place. GL!

  • I agree with the PP's. Try a trial run so you can know if you can tolerate the pain. I would think that closer to the wedding you will be so stressed that you don't want to freak out while being waxed. I would say wax no more than a week before ... well, depending on your hair growth. Good luck!

I had one the Wednesday before my Saturday wedding.  I had never had one before and had no problems.  I had stubble about a week and a half later.
  • Agreed with all the PPs. Also, I highly recommend finding a place that is actually run by Brazilian owners. There are ones here in Atlanta tha import a specific wax for this purpose and it really does make a significant difference.

  • Totally worth it! The first couple of times I broke out after and had some redness, which can happen due to friction and sweat on raw skin. Baby Powder is a beautiful thing, have it handy and reapply as needed to make sure your skin stays dry and smooth!

  • I would reccomend going before, but I would give it a couple of days before your wedding. It is the smoothest for the first few days & the day you get it done it can be red and sore.

All of this is good advice.

Get a trial run.  I have had 4 or 5 done before.  The first 2 or 3 went fine.  The last two, I am not kidding, the aftermath was excruciating.  Pieces of skin were torn, infection, crying when I went to the bathroom, many many doctor's visits.

So on that note I swore I wouldn't get it done again, just take care of it myself.

However, hopefully that never happens to you.  When I had it done it wasn't all that painful, a "dull rip" versus the sharp one you may feel with eyebrow/lip/leg, etc.  The worst is probably the bikini area itself, not the rest of it.

Depending on how fair you are would be my suggestion of how far out you wax.  I bruised every time and was tender even with my underwear  just touching me.  So I would go a week out for certain.  There won't be any hair or stubble there if you do it a week, even upwards of 1.5-2 weeks out.

But definitely do a trial run say, next month!  Take ibuprofen before you go, some after and maybe benedryl after the fact.

  • Do a trial run, and I did mine Wednesday before my Saturday wedding. I had no problems, and it lasted about 2 weeks.

The week before your period has nothing to do with this but do not go while you are on your period. They will not wax you. Don't shave for 10-14 days before you get waxed. Definitely get it done once prior to the wedding, you dont know how your skin is going to react. Once you've done that I would go as close to the wedding as possible. Waxing only really lasts about 3 weeks. I actually just opted for laser hair removal because it was so expensive to get a brazilian every month. And I recommend a spa over a salon. PPs said find some place that is owned by Brazilians. I dont know how you would even establish that...anyways. Spas usually have several types of wax and depending on your hair and skin type they will select the best for you. They are generally cleaner as well versus going to a hair and nail salon.
