Newbie(ish)

I forgot how much time I can happily waste on the knot!

I have to admit I have been a bit of a lurker the past couple of weeks.  I love all of the strong personalities on this board!

Getting married late summer of next year and litterally cannot wait!!  If it were not for an out of town future MIL we would get married today!

Happy Thursday everyone!!

Hi and Welcome. Tell us more about yourself. Who's in the military, you, your FI, both? Are you getting married in Portland since that's where you're located?
  • edited December 2011
Hi :) Are you or your FI military? What branch? I don't recall having seen posts from you before. If you already said and I missed it, sorry :/

Tell us about your wedding! Are you having a theme? What are your colors?

My FI is in the Army and has been for a looong time!!  We are getting married in Eugene since that is where I am from.

To be honest I don't know the wedding colors etc.  My mom and her best friend are surprising us with the decorations and flowers since we are having it in the best friend's backyard!  I am really excited though.  Just bought my dress this weekend in fact!  I know it's a litte early however it was an amazing deal and I couldn't pass it up!!

FI and I actually met online while he was deployed to Iraq and have been together 3 years now.  Weird how things work out....and no, I am not a tag chaser or whatever the terminoligy is for that stuff.  Things just have a way of working out when they are supposed to!

We both have been married before and I am not gonna air all our dirty laundry but let's just say it wasn't healthy or good for either of us and we are both super happy that things, as crappy as it seemed at the time, worked out the way they have!

Darrah: I  don't think I can have a surprise wedding at all. I need to know the details and I have to plan it myself! I hope everything turns our great for you!. 2 of H's cousins live in Eugene, I've been out there once, visited one of his cousins at UofO.

Congrats on getting the dress! Want to share how it looks?

</div><div>FI and I met online too; and he didn't disclose that he was in the USN until after we'd been talking for a while; so yeah, totally understand that you can meet online and not be a tag-chaser :) It took me a while to get used to the idea of him being mil, and since he's planning on being career (he's been in for 6.5 yrs and just made E6) I had to be sure this was something I could be happy with, kwim? I actually don't mind it at all, and appreciate his service and I know that I'll be okay with him being gone sometimes, even if it sucks, because it gives me time to grow as a person and I think it can help keep a relationship balanced and healthy. anyway, all this to say: maybe I'd think you were a tag chaser if you were 19 and had dated 3 guys in the military and then married a servicemember-- but you're 30, that's a bit different, even if you have dated 3 servicemembers. </div><div>
</div><div>so you're getting surprised with your colors? I don't know if I could handle that. I love my mom but I think I would -die- if she decorated my wedding! haha. We do not have the same tastes for colors!

Well I did the big crazy expensive wedding once and so did FI so this time around it isn't as important I guess to us.  Not that it shouldn't be to anyone, but it lost it's sparkle I guess.  Plus, I don't want to battle with my mom again...that is too much energy I can put in to other things!
I honestly don't care if there is a clown on stilts, everyone wears neon pink and chartruese or if we have corndogs for dinner.  I care more about marrying FI.  I know...I am super corny!  Plus my mom and her friend are amazing...my mom is an interior decorator and her friend and I have the exact same taste, so I am not worried at all!

Would love to share the dress....dunno how to pip though!

I would have objections to the clowns.  I am terrified of them thanks to a baby sitter and Penny Wise.  HAA!

You are a brave woman but I get what you mean.

To the new girl, HI!!!  Welcome!  I'm glad you both found each other, especially as you didn't start out with the right people for either of you.

Very pretty dress. Do you have an idea for shoes yet?  Shoes are my weakness!

  • edited December 2011
Shoes are my weakness too!  I am thinking a wedge (don't want to get stuck in the grass!) with some bling on them to match the dress.  I am not doing a veil, but going with a vintage head piece instead.  Going to head out in January and look at some of the vintage bridal stores in town for one!

    Welcome!

    Pretty dress!

Unlike the other ladies I would love if someone would take over wedding planning for me. As long as I get final say, I would love for someone to find vendors, pick out decorations, send invites, and coordinate everything.  As long as FI was there I don't care about the other things too much.

My mom and his mom are doing the food, so no vendor there.  My best friend has a degree in baking and pastry arts, so she is doing our cupcake table, no vendor there.  My mom's best friend is providing her house for the venue and renting everything needed, we are doing music on an ipod and a friend has offered to coordinate it.  Another friend is doing our pictures (amazing work) for $100.  WE have to provide ourselves, our minister (family friend), our wedding attire, and the wine.  So yeah, pretty easy!

Very nice!  Yes, I got a wedge because we're getting married on the grass, too.  Check out Ideeli.com (if you need an invite, PM me your email).  They have sales regularly for shoes and stuff, and I saw a bunch of Badgley Mischka shoes, marked down from $210 to $65!  Several were sparkly wedges.

It sounds great.  I might suggest a really cool hair pin or something.  If you can't find anything you like try Etsy.  They have some great things!

Oh and true story, I had heels and walked on the grass when going down the aisle and almost busted face.  Like I mean I almost feel into the Chaplain.  I am super clumsy and fall all of the time so I should have known better.
  • edited December 2011
I doubt you are more clumsy than me!  Not that it's a competition but I slipped, fell and busted my own face into my metal front door last year and gave myself a black eye!  Poor FI didn't want to be seen in public with me because he didn't want people to think he beats me.  Poor guy!

I will check out that site for shoes for sure!  Thank you!

I may go with a hair pin, but my hair is chin length and curly so I want to wear it down I think , which is why I think a vintage head piece with a feather or flower etc may work best!

love is love no matter who it is with in my opinion. I just didn't have the requirement of them being military to be interested.  It takes a lot to make a relationship work and it takes double that to make it work if one or both of you are military.  I just want to see people happy and in the right place for the right reason.  No name calling etc, just rainbows and butterflies for all!!  :)

Enh, I didn't have that requirement either, but I've never seriously dated anyone who worked in the private sector. Those guys never understood how I feel about my country or what I wanted as a career, and I hated their Justin Bieber hair. Or all the bro-ness. Deep patriotism and not being a hippie was a requirement though.
