Names on invitation

Piggybacking off of Chelsea's post...

Legally, my name is Tara Shannon.  From a young age, I kind of flipped them so everyone knows me as Shannon.  I know invites are traditionally First name Middle name, but I am torn on what to do for ours.  Do we both need to use middle names, or can just Fi?  What should I write?

Re: Names on invitation

  • Whichever you choose, I don't think you should do Shannon Tara since that's not your name.

  • I would go with just Shannon if that is how everyone knows you.

    Here is how i would decide;

If your friends & family that are not super close to you got an invite that said Tara Shannon would they know who that is?

My fiance has a nickname that he has gone by for years, but uses full legal name for legal stuff (Eugene/Geno), some would know him by 1, others would know him by the other, i am not sure which name i am going with but i know it is going to mix up people either way.

I agree with this. Pick what you like.

  • I agree that you shouldn't use Shannon Tara. I like just shannon, but if I were you I'd get some input from your parents. Would they be offended if you don't use your real first name? That doesn't have to dictate what you choose, but I'm sure they'd appreciate you asking for their input/giving them a heads up.

  • Yeah, don't flip them.  Either use your full legal name or just do Shannon Lastname.
  • I would go with just Shannon. Like you said everyone knows you by that and I also don't think it would look bad if you leave off the middle names. Some people don't even have middle names.
  • Okay, I was kind of leaning towards Shannon only as well.  Everyone who is close to me knows that my first name is legally the "T word," but I really just don't want to use that on my invitation-to write it would feel like I was a stranger or something...

So here is my follow-up question,

If I am Shannon only, does Fi have to be William only, or should he use his middle name?

I would keep it consistent. So if you are just Shannon ____. Then I would only use his first and last.

  • I think that would make the most sense. That way they would "match."
  • I am sure it would be fine either way but my personal opinion would be just William. I think it would look a little strange with his middle name and not yours.
  • I was thinking the matching would be best, as well.  Plus, he is the fourth of his name so his would have been extremely long as opposed to my one word.  Thanks ladies, I'm glad this is figured out now!  :)

  • I would say don't put your Fi middle name unless his middle name is very important to him (i.e. named after someone etc.)

  • I think the matching would work best.

In my family a lot of us go by our middle names too.  If you are not having a black tie wedding you'll be fine with just Shannon.
