North Meets South/City girl and Country boy wedding theme...HELP!!!!

My fiance and I have gone back and forth with wedding themes and have finally settled on a North meets South theme. We think this is perfect because he is from a small town from Southwest Georgia and despite living in Atlanta for 11 years, my family and I are from New Jersey. The problem is that I have no clue on to where to start. We know that we want equal representation in the venue, decor, food, drinks, and favors; however we just don't know where to start. I've looked online but I don't really find anything and I really don't want to use a wedding planner. Any Ideas?

  • I'm just not really sure what you mean by "north meets south."  If you just want to incorportae things that are from both of your hometowns/home regions, I don't really think that's a theme, that's just...incorporating things from both of your hometowns.  And I'm not sure how exactly you could have a 50% northern and 50% southern-style venue (same with decor, at least without it looking really clashy).  Can you tell me a little bit more about what you're picturing when you say that?  I might be able to help more.

Disclaimer: I'm not a fan of wedding themes at all; I pretty much think the theme of a wedding should be "wedding."  So feel free to take what I say with a grain of salt.

I also question what you mean by a theme. Are you talking Confederate flags and sleeveless NASCAR t-shirts combined with spray tan booths and steroid favors? See where I'm going here? Don't overthink it. It's a wedding. Let that be your theme.
  • I would ask him family if there are any southern traditions that you could incorporate into the day. Same thing with traditions from your area. See what you can combine, it may be certain food dishes, dances, or other traditions. It's really no different then if you have coupone where the bride is say German and the Groom is Italian, taking wedding customs from those two countries to honor your heritage. Good luck, don't over think it & I'm sure it will be wonderful.
  • I would do it with food and drink. Anything more than that starts to feel kitschy.
  • Maybe find a rustic venue and glam it up? Maybe use a barn and add some chandeliers and more modern/"East-coast"/preppy centerpieces?

  • I'm guessing your thinking Sweet Home Alabama style where they are trying to combine her "city girl" style into the deep South =) I suggest mixing the two wherever possible to create a unique juxtaposition. I'm thinking a pulled pork sandwich on a fine china plate. Or, wood, burlap, and lace accents mixed with stripes, glass, and rhinestones. You wear high heeled shoes and him in cowboy boots. I think you just need to mix and match!

<div>Thank you. That's what I see it as a combination of our families and our cultures. I guess that I'm seeing it as more of a theme than it actually is. I'll keep working at it.</div>
