Ceremony Questions

We're not having a religious ceremony and we're getting married by a friend of our families, who is a judge.

If you're not having a religious ceremony, what readings/poems/whatnot are you doing?

Re: Ceremony Questions

  • We are having a religious ceremony, but we are having a non-religious reading.  Our dogs are a big part of our life, so we are having the poem, "Falling in love is like owning a dog" by Taylor Mali read by one of our friends.

  • We're not doing a religious ceremony, but we're fortunate enough to have a pastor who understands that, so it's like a nondenominational. We're doing 3 readings (and then using a poem as sort of a before-dinner-reflection).

(Not sure we've finalized the order yet)
To Love is Not to Possess
    James Kavanaugh
    From The Irrational Season
    By Madeleine L'Engle
    Tin Wedding Whistle
    By Ogden Nash

    From A House of Stone

  • My Uncle is doing our ceremony. I asked him to write a little insert with whatever he wanted to say about marriage, etc. He did a great job.

My Mom is going to do a short reading from Captain Corelli's Mandolin. I've never read the book or seen the movie, but I found the quote online and really liked it.

Eeeeeee!  We are doing this too. I love Taylor Mali (have taught his stuff for years). My cousin is reading it for us, which is fitting, because she's a huge dog lover too.

We're also doing "Blessing for a Marriage" by James Dillet Freeman.  Robert Fulgham's Union is already written into our ceremony.

I'm not having anybody else do readings. The JP will says whatever he's going to say about marriage, then he's going to talk about our box, and then we're getting vowed :P

My FI asked me yesterday what readings we wanted/were doing.  I'm like ummm.... none? haha, which is why I asked.  I just figured say hi, marry us and be on our way, but he wants to do at least one so obviously I'm not going to say no. haha

So in short, no you're not really weird/out of the ordinary.

  • Thanks so much everyone!  I just read "How falling in love is like owning a dog" and ohmy... I love it!  We have two little furry ones, whom life revolves around, so this is perfect for us!

I hope FI loves it too!
