Church Decor

So I am just looking for suggestions on what to do.  I visited the church where our ceremony will be held today (FI and I are not using our own church beacuse it is too small) and fell back in love with it.  From the begining I have said that I wasn't going to use resources (both time and money) to worry about decor beacuse it is a very grand and beautiful church in itself; however, when I went there today I was second guessing myself.  The church is still just as beautiful but I almost feel as though I want to add some personal touches just so there is some cohesivness between ceremony and reception.  I was looking for some DIY or inexpensive suggestions on how to add some personal touches to the church.  Date is 8/18 BTW...... TIA!

Re: Church Decor

  • I'm in a simliar situation. I think I'm going to add some flowers on the edge of the altar. I'm not sure if your church would allow you to do this. The altar at our church isn't going to be used, so it's not a big deal.

I think I'm going to get a kind of long, low vase, put some floral foam in it and then stick in a bunch of silk flowers. I did the same thing for our reception, so it'll fit nicely. Nice thing is that summer silk florals are going on sale right about now, so it should be pretty inexpensive.

  • I am having two floral arrangements on the altar that will be repurposed as centerpieces at our reception. I will also have raffia fan programs that match my wedding colors. That's pretty much it.

I have resisted the urge to try to make my beautiful church more beautiful with a lot of personalization and decoration. A church isn't a regular "venue", so I want to try to keep the focus on God, instead of me and FI.

My advice would be to remember less is more. Good luck!
  • We got some fake flowers and had bows made for the pews.  The flowers weren't THAT inexpensive because I'm not crafty so we paid the store to arrange them, but it's a thought if you're handy with that.
  • We got a couple plants to put at the entrance and a few craft twig-like things to put in the sconces along the side walls. That's all we are doing for decorations because it is a pretty grand cathedral building.
  • I would just put pew bows at the first 2-3 rows of pews. Mostly the ones that the parents and grandparents will be seated at. Then call it a day. If it has a lot of natural beauty, then don't do too much to it.
  • We are getting married outdoors, not in a church, but I understand where you are coming from. The area has a lot of natural beauty and flowers, so it doesn't really need any more decorations, but I feel compelled to add something.

We are just getting bows to put on the first couple rows in each aisle to indicate they are reserved for close family.  We are also renting two pillars and putting floral arrangements on them at the beginning of the aisle.  These will then be moved indoors to use as decoration at the reception.

I would say if you do choose to decorate, just keep it simple and low-cost.

We are getting married outside so our decor is a little more casual than yours. We are putting a lantern at the end of every other row and on the rows without lanterns we are doing Martha Stewart paper poufs in our wedding colors. We are also tying bows to the backs of all of the chairs in the back row. My florist is going to make a single large arrangement for our ceremony arch.

If you can swing it and if your aisle is wide enough/your church will allow it you could put pillar candles in vases, that would be really beautiful and romantic. A more playful touch that I've seen is tying framed pics of you and your FI to each pew with a ribbon.

  • Thanks for all the input and advice!!  I think I am going to try for some simple bows or small arrangements to hang on a few of the pews.  I feel like there is just so much planning that went into this and being down to the wire I am just looking for things to do when I should really just be relaxing!!!
  • I am actually not getting married in a church but in a movie theater.  I love the industrial look that is already there, We ended up deciding not to do a lot of decorating in the theater area, but instead doing some lighting.

  • Our church has a natural beauty to it as well, and we originally weren't going to do any decorating. However, with only 2 weeks out, I'm also second guessing that. I found this picture from the pews at my church, and I love it. Simple, and doesn't take away from the natural beauty. I'm going to have 8 of them , four on each side on every other pew.

  • I'm of the opinion that churches are beautiful on their own.  And typically, they already have some form of decoration up depending on the season.   I had to do some convincing of my FMIL, but I'm not doing any church decorations.  The coordinator at the church totally agreed though--she says churches are beautiful, and we'll be wearing flowers (and we want people to look at us anyway).

That's really lovely. Simple and elegant.
  • I'm just having flowers similar to the ones we will have. I added some personal touchs to the flowers by just having the kinds of arrangements I wanted. We are also having pew bows on a few of the pews. Nothing fancy by just enough to add the extra touch to the church that is ours. I didn't want to take away from the beauty of the church.
