Can't decide! Couples or Secrets...or Kauai?

My fiance and I are having some trouble deciding where to go for our honeymoon at the end of May. We have the opportunity to stay at a timeshare condo in Kauai for free but I am worried with it not being all inclusive it might turn out to be more of a pain. And fear there might not be much to do in the evenings.

We have been leaning towards Couples Negril or Secrets Maroma.
We would ideally like a place with great beaches/water, good food and plenty of activitie/excursion opportunities.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

There was a post on here about a week ago where someone had a free week in Kauai but was concerned about not having any nightlife. Everyone recommended that the poster get over the lack of nightlife and head to Kauai because it's gorgeous there! I'm actually heading back there in May. Even though I am not a night owl or one to go out at night, I can't even imagine wanting to after being outside all day in the sun doing activities or laying by the pool. You will want to get up early and venture out to get as much time outside as possible. As for food and drink, yes, it is convenient to have an all inclusive option, but the good thing about Kauai, and even better about having a condo in Kauai, is that you can stop by the WalMart near the airport. pick up some supplies, and not have to spend a fortune eating out every day. I'm not sure which timeshare resort you would be staying at, but we have stayed at a few Westin timeshare resorts and they have nice grills. We would BBQ some chicken and sit out on our patio with some drinks. Since it's free and Mexico or Jamaica are easier to get to, I wouls save the all inclusive for an anniversary and take this amazing opportunity to head to Hawaii.

EDIT- Spike included some info below that may help you gauge my opinion. I have been to Secrets Maroma and I have been to Couples Sans Souci and Tower Isle. As you guess from above, I've also been to Kauai previously. My rankings: Kauai, Secrets Maroma, then Couples (any of them.)

  • Ditto pp's if we had to choose between Kauai and Jamaica.. Hawaii would win HANDS DOWN. I've been to Jamaica twice, it's pretty and a lot of fun, but Hawaii is GORGEOUS and much safer.
  • Thanks everyone! Your posts have been incredibly helpful. My fiance has been leaning towards Kauai so he will be very happy to see that's what you all recommended as well. I think you are all right, nightlife probably won't matter much because of the jet lag. We want to go for 10 days and since the timeshare is only for 7 we are thinking of maybe staying at another hotel on the island or perhaps hopping to a different island for a change of scenery.

Any other Hawaiian islands or hotels you would recommend checking out? I was thinking either Maui or Oahu.

    Thanks again!!!!

Oahu is the closest by flight and one of the more reasonably priced options. That way, you aren't wasting a lot of time transferrring between islands.  Not sure what your budget is for a hotel there, but I have stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and the Hyatt Regency. The Hyatt is right in the downtown Waikiki area, so you are steps from shopping, nightlife, and restaurants. The beach is right across the street. The Hilton was my fav of the two and is right on the beach. There are several towers there, so there are rooms at many price ranges. The Hilton has a lot on site- almost 20 restaurants and several stores. If you have a little extra room in the budget, try for the Ali'i Tower, which is private and has it's own pool and a happy hour with hors d'oeurves. The Hilton is not right in downtown- it's between the airport/Pearl Harbor area and Waikiki. Both resorts are big, but the Hilton is bigger.

Where is the timeshare in Kauai? If it's in Princeville, you can also consider staying in Poipu, or vice versa. I would just spend some time on Oahu, though.
