Gluten Free?

What is gluten free? Who here is doing it?

A person here at work is having some digestion problems and is trying to explain it to me but its the blind leading the blind. But his diet seems to be helping his issues. Was curious what it entailed.

Re: Gluten Free?

  • It's not a "dieting" technique, although it seems to be becoming a fad in that way.. It's for people with celiacs, or just touchy GI issues in general. Just like you can be intolerant to dairy, you can be intolerant to gluten.
    Just google it. :)

I do not suggest you try this kinda "diet" unless you are having issues in that area, although I do think that it never hurts to cut down on grain intake.. Americans are known to be consuming far too many as is.

It appears to be used to treat a whole ton of things. Worded my statement kind of funny. It appears my diet is rather simliar already with my restrictions.

He is looking for recipes online. We are doing our "recipe exchange" at work.

Edit Clarity. I forgot everyone assume "diet" means a change to lose weight. I mean diet as in what a person eats on a regular basis. I eat a low-carb diabetic style meals whereas he is working on his gluten free meals. If that helps.

  • Google "gluten free blogs" there are tons out there.  And many recipes that are not GF recipes can easily be made GF, by subbing GF products or cutting them out.

When I was first starting, I had the best luck with simply skipping GF replacement products, and sticking to things that were naturally GF.  There is hidden gluten in many processed foods, so sticking to natural clean foods is easiest.

    This! Exactly this!

You become a better cook and eat 100x healthier as a result. My sodium intake down to nothing, processed/trans fat virtually gone discovering my gluten allergy was the best thing to ever happen to me.

Check out "Wheat Belly" on Amazon (I read it on my Kindle) -- though I don't necessarily subscribe to all of his assessments, I do find that I feel better in general when my gluten consumption is low. (I say this as I had a bagel this morning...)

  • I am a celiac I've been gluten free 8 years I'm in my 9th year. I advise anyone considering gluten free to go to a doctor first and be tested for celiac. If you arent eating gluten you will get a false negative.

The real gluten free diet isnt a diet but a lifestyle. I avoid gluten in shampoo, medicines, soaps, make-up, etc.No wheat, barley, rye, tritcale, or most oats or any of their derrivatives ever.

The diet has become a lot easier and the products a lot better. Restaurants are much more aware too. 9 years ago times were rough as a newly diagnosed celiac, the products were aweful and limited.
