Eating before morning workouts

For those of you who work out first thing in the morning, do you eat first? I never do because I don't wake up hungry and I find it difficult to workout on a full stomach. Now that I'm thinking of adding a run in after bootcamps, I'm wondering if I should eat something small in between or if it's ok to wait til I'm done with everything?

Re: Eating before morning workouts

  • I make myself eat something.  Nothing big by any means but something.  Toast with peanut butter, a babybel cheese, a handful of berries..  Just something.  I feel like my metabolism doesn't get revved up until I get some kind of food in there.  Maybe a light smoothie for between workouts?
  • It depends on your body.  If you feel lightheaded or anything, you probably should eat.  There are many advocates for both camps, and I completely get the idea of having something in your system before taxing your body.

I have severe acid reflux and other gastro issues that make it nearly impossible for me to workout with any food in my stomach.  I have to eat at least four hours before a PM workout, so there's no way I can eat in the morning, and it hasn't caused me any problems.

  • Weighing in on the other end - it depends for me what I'm doing.  If I'm working out with the PT or doing strength training in the morning, then I try to make sure I've eaten something before I go to the gym.  I just wouldn't have enough fuel on board if I didn't.

On the other hand, if I am doing a HIIT cardio session I may not eat before going because it's a quick session and I know it's more likely to give me a side cramp or make me feel sluggish when I'm trying to get the burn on.

Maybe try both and see how you feel?  It IS tough to get a mini meal in before a workout first thing in the morning!!
  • I am much like windsor,

last weekend I ate breakfast before a HIIT class about 30 mins before I went to the class...and lets just say it didn't work out so well for me, half way through the workout I totally lost my breakfast...so embarrassing.

I talked to a personal trainer friend of mine and she suggested nothing more then a few sips of coconut water and a handful of berries prior to a class like that.

I dont have any problem eating before a pump class or any strength training

I personally dont and I go to the gym at 5:30am most days. I do usually have a protein shake or something as soon as I get home and I drink a ton of water during my work outs. I think it depends on what your body requires. If you feel like you need more energy to work out in the mornings maybe grab something quick and easy before your work out.

  • I work out around 5 every morning, and I drink a protein shake on the way to the gym.  I usually lift first, so I have some time to digest before doing cardio.  Not everyone is a fan of protein shakes, but when I'm getting up that early in the morning, it's really all I have time for.  Later on when I'm home I have a "real" breakfast.  But if I go without eating anything, I cannot endure my workout.
  • I'm sorry, I'm not much help to you. I eat breakfast, wait for it to digest for about an hour and then I go work out. I just cannot do ANYTHING without eating breakfast first, and then I do find it really hard to work out just after eating (unless I'm doing something like power walking with minimal bouncing). This is why I work out in the afternoon or evenings! Good luck making something work!

I like the idea of just trying both and seeing what you feel is best. A protein shake may be a good way to go too!

  • It is personal preference.. I eat greek yogurt before my morning work outs, and if I go from my cardio class straight to yoga, I try to remember to bring a banana or something to put in my bod in between.. I don't want to wreck the hard work by not fueling up :)
  • Thanks everyone. I was just curious if I was doing it wrong. I'll probably stick with waiting til I'm all done. I usually drink a ton of water during so I guess if my body isn't asking for it, it's alright.
