moving?

We live in Squirrel Hill and we absolutely love being able to walk to tons of shops and restaurants and everything. But, FI recently got a job out by the airport and I feel really bad for him having to commute so far in traffic every day. Also, our apartment is realllyyy tiny. It was fine when it was just me by myself, but FI moved in a few months ago and we're feeling cramped now.

So, we're trying to decide if we want to move somewhere halfway between Pitt/CMU and the airport. Any suggestions on places to live or other pros/cons to consider about moving?

Hey there...we also live in Squirrel Hill.  One thing to think about when deciding is the commute during rush hour.  My FI works at Southside Works and I work in Cranberry.  We have decided against moving closer to my work because even though my commute is 25 miles, I go against rush hour traffic.  If we moved to the North Hills, my FI would be joining the thousands of others who pack the parkway North into town each morning.
Maybe over the next week or so, you FI can just keep an eye on traffic moving into town while he is driving to the airport.  This way you can have an idea of what you will be facing...assuming you will be the one commuting into town.
    Just a thought.  Good luck!!

Pittsburgh September Siggy - Our honeymoon will be at the Royal Suites Turquesas in P*nta Cana. Super excited!

I'm totally a cheerleader for Mt. Washington.  The only reason I don't live there is because FI owns a home.  It would be super convenient for you, and its really convient to all of the major highways, because you can go down the front and hit blvd of the allies, go down the back and hit 51 or the Parkway West.

If you work in Oakland, you can easily take the  incline down, get downtown by walking or the trolley then catch any bus that goes into Oakland.  It gives you a ton of flexibility, because you aren't relying on just one route.  And the incline guys get to know the regular commuters.  I would take it almost daily, and if i were running late, they would just start the incline for me.

Oh, plus, there are lots of restaurants, coffee shops, drug stores and even a grocery store up there...not giant eagle, but you have everything you need.

We're actually looking at some houses for rent on Mt Washington tomorrow so it's good to know all of this! Thanks for the advice :)

Oh, please don't move to closer to the airport! You'll regret that commute into Oakland/the city! I lived in Shadyside and then moved out to Moon Twp after getting together with my FI and that commute on the Parkway West through the tunnels made me want to die! :( I do have friends that live in Greentree, though, and they love it/have no issues!
