Turning wedding dress into cocktail dress

My wedding was a few days ago. I was thinking of having my wedding dress shortened into a cocktail dress to wear on our anniversaries. Has anyone here done this?

  • I've seen a few blog posts on this. I'm also considering doing the same thing. I would find a seamstress that has worked with wedding dresses before since there are so many layers, boning, etc.

I haven't picked my dress yet, but one of the ones I liked that I tried on last weekend could easily be shortened into a knee length or mini dress (if I did this, I'd use the leftover fabric as a christening gown for future kids. Two uses=awesome!) I will say that out of the two dresses I liked, I could only see one being shortened and used this way. The other was just too wedding-y (I LOVED it, but I couldn't see wearing it again, even to a nice dinner. It was drop waiste so I had a hard time picturing how they would shorten it).

Anyway, it has been done before and you can easily shorten and wear your dress again.
  • I'm going to do this, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to cut my dress yet.  My dress is fairly simple (a lined eyelet v-neck ballgown) so I won't have much trouble doing it myself.  If you have a really elaborate dress or don't sew much, I'd look into having a professional do it.  Like PP mentioned, I'm planning to make a christening gown with the extra material.

  • I wanted to do this to my dress too! Mine has 2 layers, a silk under layer and a lace overlay, so it should be fairly easy.  My grandma almost had a heart attack when I said it though (she purchased the dress).  It is now being held ransom in her closet....  We (my sisters and me) also wanted to get it dyed black, which I think was the scary part for her.
