Am I wrong to not tip my baker?

Because I don't want to tip my baker.

It's been a nightmare dealing with her.  Not a wake up screaming kind of nightmare, but a nightmare none-the-less.  We've exchanged almost 50 e-mails and phone calls in the past two weeks (I live too far to go see her in person), and my confidence level in her ability to understand what I'm trying to describe to her design-wise is absolutely zero.  So much so, that it's come down to me asking her to bake the cake and ice it in plain buttercream and skip decorating it.  We'll have the florist add flowers.

If she didn't make such amazingly delicious cake, I'd have cut ties weeks ago.

I feel like she falls into the "you don't have to tip if they own their own business" rule (she's a sole proprietor).  But I'm also in the less than 3 weeks out and foggy-wedding-brain stage of this, so I need some back-up on this decision.

Re: Am I wrong to not tip my baker?

  • If she owns her own shop, a tip is not required anyway.

Even if she didn't... tips are not automatic.  If she really is causing you this much hassle, I say skip the tip.  But I would wait to make a final decision until after wedding... i.e. after the cake has been delivered.  Never know, she might design exactly what you want.
  • I don't think you need to tip her.

  • If she owns her own biz and sucks to work with, I wouldn't tip.

  • I dont see why you should have to tip her since you are already paying for her services. We are not tiping our baker.  However we are not having the problems you are having!

Hopefully it all turns out well!

  • I knew y'all were going to say that.  But it does help to hear.

I'm trying to work out my final budget, and make sure I have cash/envelopes on hand to tip day-of, so that's why it's on my mind right now.
  • I didn't tip my baker.  He works from his home, and the cake was delicious, but I just didn't think a tip was necessary.  I paid the quoted price and that was it.

  • I only paid my quoted price as well. I def would not have if I had problems with them.

Well, that's the important part, when there is cake.

  • Dude, My wedding? In less than 3 weeks. Booked our baker at least 8 months ago. I get a quote from her TODAY. So for the first time ever, I know what my cake will actually cost. Of course, it was withing $25 of what I estimated, but still.

Same deal. If her cake wasn't the BEST I had ever tasted, I would have found someone else. But we've ordered from her before and I know she'll come through. But no, she's not getting a tip. not because she's been flaky, but because I just don't want to tip her. She works out of her house. Same with our florist. FI and I ahd this discussion this morning.
