bike question

I don't run, and I'm not trying to find the best crash diet, so I felt uncomfortable posting on either H&F or GIS.

I currently have a bike like this (clicky). I also have RA, which affects my wrists. My doctor has suggested I take up bike riding as a low-impact way to lose weight, but my current bike hurts my wrists so bad, to the point where I once had my dad come pick me up from the bike trail.

I've been to two bike shops. They said my form was fine, and one of them suggested a cruiser bike like this (clicky), since you're supposed to ride more upright.

I want to ride on a paved, relatively flat bike trail and ride my bike to the grocery store. Has anyone had a bike like the second one? Do you like it? Does it put less weight on your wrists? Is the bike shop guy full of shiit?

Edited to make my clicky links click.

Re: bike question

  • I have a Trek hybrid and I love it.  You do ride upright so it is comfortable on your wrists.    http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/town/recreation/hybrid/7100_wsd/#   I chose this one over the true cruisers because it has the different speeds and because it is supposed to be able to ride on trails and we have some nice pressed gravel trails here on old railroad tracks.

However, it is not for riding fast.  It is for cruising.  That sometimes irritates DH when we bike together.  He likes to ride faster and I like to cruise and take my time.

*I almost forgot, the real reason I bought it was that it came with a bell.
