Running Question

Hi Ladies!!

I am really starting to enjoy running.  I am finally able to make it longer distances.  I have been running on average 30 -50 minutes 3 - 4 times a week.  I am not the fastest running inthe world by anymeans usually run about 5.5 mph.  How do I avoid having to go to the bathroom when i either A) make it about the 30 minute mark or B) when I try to increase my speed.

I am fairly regular as it is, eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water.  Most days I just quit running when I have to go since I am already back in the locker room.

Sorry if this is TMI but everyone is very helpful and I am afraid to start running outside on trails once the weather gets warmer.

Thanks :)

Re: Running Question

  • That's a pretty common problem, actually.  Does it still happen if you go before your run?  If not, I'd try to time it so you've already gone before your run if that's at all possible.

  • Totally have that problem.  If I don't take precautions I ALWAYS have to go 15 minutes in.  Like clockwork.   I find that not drinking any water for 45 minutes before (I drink while running) and having a fiber snack (i do sunsweet ones) prevents any need for a bathroom break until post-run.
  • J&K - it happens when I go before I go on a run as well as when I don't.
Anna - Thanks for the tips I will have to try those and see if it helps.  I usually drink water all day long right up until I go to the gym.  I thought I eat enough fiber all day but I will definitely try to eat some before I go.

Won't be able to go for another run until Saturday and will see what happens

    Thanks!
  • Are we talking #1 or #2?

Either way,  make sure you go before hand.  Also,  Try running in the AM, before eating a large meal,  have a banana.  Since you've been sleeping all night and not eating,  you wont have stuff to get rid of first thing in the morning.

Its going to happen.  I run trails and I'll be out on a mountain for 3-4 hours at a time.  I eat while I run,  and I ALWAYS bring toilet paper.  I know its going to happen.  Can't avoid that,  but you should be able to if you are goign out for less than an hour.

I do not reccomend doiong what I do if you are running on roads.

Awesome that you're loving the running,  definitely throw in some resistance training for the legs to avoid injuries!

    Greg
