Alaska in December? Really?

We are getting married at the end of November, and FI wants to honeymoon in Alaska. I have lived in the south all my life, and neither of us has ever skied. He claims to have found a resort with incuded spa treatments, but I am worried that there will be no sunlight and I will just be cold all week.
We have to stay in the US because he is not yet a citizen and can't get a passport. I wanted Hawaii but he is set on Alaska.

Did anyone ever vacation in Alaska in December? Do you still have all of your extremeties in tact?

Re: Alaska in December? Really?

  • EDIT: I got some really great responses to this XP on the Etiquette board and think I have enough info to convince FI this is not a good idea. Any further info is appreciated, though.

  • Puerto Rico could be another option - you dont need a passport & if you are in a southern region, its closer to get to than Hawaii. It also offers culture (historical from Spain, etc), city night life (casinos, etc), and beaches of course! :-) Plus rainforest tours.

I heard Alaska was beautiful, but the 6 months of some-what darkness, would put me in hibernation mode.

    best wishes to you's...

  • You def. need a passport now to go to PR...
  • You do NOT need a passport to go to Puerto Rico if you are traveling directly from within the United States.  It is a US territory- it's just like flying from New York to California.

I think Alaska in December would be beautiful- you would have a great chance at seeing the Northern Lights!- but very cold, especially if you two grew up in the south and have never skied.  Sounds like you already made up your mind, and I think you're making a good decision to go elsewhere or save the trip for warmer months.
