XP- Lets Talk about Aisle Runners

So, I have decided to make my aisle runner. I am hoping I do not regret this decision, because I am so not crafty at all. This will be my first DIY project and I am scared. Does anyone have any tips on how not to mess this up. If you did your own, can I see pictures? TIA

Re: XP- Lets Talk about Aisle Runners

  • I made one before a while ago for one of my friends.  Are you painting anything on it or just making the runner?

  • I want to put our monogram on it. I am in the process of getting that done, now.

  • When filling in letters, start in the center, not with the outline.  As you get more comfortable, you'll be painting it more smoothly and will be less likely to make a mistake on the outlines.

Make sure you somehow pin your outline or pattern onto the aisle runner, so it doesn't move around; then also tack or tape them to a stable surface to paint on.

Use a mostly dry brush; squeeze your paint onto a plate or bowl, and only pick up a tiny bit at a time, blotting off any globs or drips before you put your brush down.  If you forget to do this, this is also a good reason why you should start in the center of a letter or object - it's easier to smooth out from there, rather than the outside line!

  • so glad you posted this question! I'm planning on starting mine later this week, possibly over the weekend. any tips for using a satin/polyester runner? I'm assuming I will need special fabric paint, but I'm not sure what to use to trace the outlines on the cloth . I'm not sure a pencil will work!

  • I bought unbleached muslin for mine and I am in the process of getting the runner made so I can paint it. I got fabric paint from Joann's and I got a large poster from VP to have the monagram big enough for the aisle runner ... I am hoping to get started on it real soon but school and kids and taxes are taking all my time

  • also, where do I find pretty swirly top and botton borders? None of the borders I've seen will work or be what I want on the microsoft office free clip art, and I have no idea how to make it print really big and not come out cut off or looking weird. . . help?

  • Just a fair warning, you're going to need a lot of patience. I think mine ended up taking me 9 hours to complete. If you would like, I posted how I did it, with pics, in my planning bio. There's a link in my siggy. Good luck though!

Abbe had some very good advice. I started at the outline first and quickly learned to start in the middle until I got better. Also, go slow because if you mess up, it's pretty much impossible to fix it!

    Post pis when you're done!
  • I will Cassie, thank u. I love how yours turned out!

  • I would pin your pattern and use a pencil to trace it directly onto the runner.  Abbe gave some great tips so I'll just give you some others that I've notice while doing a friend's.

1: use wax paper or something on the back of where you will be painting so the runner does not stick to whatever you are painting on if the paint goes all the way through.  The wax paper can be peeled off easily at the end.

2: As Cassie said, expect to spend a lot of time on it.  I just painted over a few days when I had time and wanted to.

3: If possible, just keep the runner laid out so you can leave it and come back to it.  Plus the paint is less likely to go somewhere it shouldn't.

4: For most fabrics runners come in, a little bit of soapy water on a rag can help remove any mess ups.

5: roadtotheaisle is a great blog that has directions on how to do it.  I followed the suggestions there and it worked out great.
