Addressing +guest?

So, we have a few people on our guest list that we would like let them bring a guest if they so desire. How do we address this? Do we put "John Smith and Guest" on the envelope? I made a mistake with our RSVP cards, so they just ask for" __No. Guests," and no name. Oh well.

So, how do I address "and guest"?

Re: Addressing +guest?

  • I am addressing it to the person who I'm inviting who is my friend or family. And on the RSVP I put a spot for them to write in a guests name.

  • We kind of went against etiquette on this one since we didn't have an outer/inner envelope. Typically, you address the outer envelope to the person you're invite (i.e. "Mr. John Smith) & then write "Mr. John Smith & Guest" on the inner envelope. But, since we didn't have the outer/inner envelope & I didn't put a spot on my RSVP cards for them to write their guest's name, we just addressed our invitations as "Mr. John Smith and Guest." We put the "and Guest" underneath the "Mr. John Smith." I know it's not what you're "supposed" to do, but that was the best way for us to make it clear to those we are allowing to bring a guest. Hopefully the e-police don't kill me :)

  • I did the same as the 2 PP's. It's not correct but honestly I doubt anyone I invited truely cares about etiquette or will even notice. We also did not do an outer/inner envelope so I had no where to really write it in.

  • I addressed the outer enevlope with "Mr. John Smith" and the inner envelops I went more casual & just put "John & Guest". I know that's not what you're suppose to do but oh well. That's why I steer clear of the etiquette board =)

May the etiquette police strike you down!

Lol. This is what I was thinking, and I am sure no one will care. Just like I am TYPING the name on a label and not handwritting each address. :)

    Thanks, ladies!
  • My envelope is just addressed to the person I'm inviting.  I don't have an inner envelope so what I did was write the name of the person & guest on the belly band that will be going around my invites.  HTH!

  • I'm writing "Mr. John Smith and Guest" as well.  I doubt that people will be offended if you do it that way and if they are then I will offend people too bah!

  • Same as a few PPs, we didn't have an outter/inner envelope so I just put "and guest" on the outside envelope.
If people are so offended by it that they won't come to our wedding, I don't want them there anyways :)

We did put "We have reserved __2___ seats in your honor" on our RSVP card so it was clear again that they could bring someone and a line to fill in their names.

But if your RSVPs are printed and you can't do that, oh well.. i vote jsut put it on the outter envelope.

  • We only gave guests to people in relationships, which was nearly everyone. We tried our very hardest to find the name of everyone's significant other, even if we've never met said SO. I did some asking around and facebook stalking to find out. I did end up addressing about three envelopes "& guest" because no one knew the last name of the significant other and I felt even worse about addressing it to "John Smith & Katie" Most other people would call, but I have about 18 cousins spread across the country who my family is in varying degrees of in touch with. It's just really akward to call up a cousin you haven't seen in 3 years and be like "are you dating anyone right now?"

Anyway- I say "& Guest" is fine on an outter envelope if that's what you need to get the message across!

  • I didn't have inner envelopes so I wrote "and guest" on the outside envelope.  Bad etiquette, but I doubt anyone will notice or care.
