Ceremony start time?

Hello ladies! My fiance and I are trying to figure out the best time for our ceremony to begin. Our wedding date is July 12, 2014 in Newport-- the ceremony will be at Ochre Court, and our reception at the Officer's Club on the Navy Base. The reception's cocktail hour begins at 6:00pm, the formal reception at 7:00pm, and we are having a civil ceremony (i.e. 15 minutes tops). We want to give our guests adequate time to either drive to the ceremony site, or back to the hotel to pick up the shuttle we are providing, (not to mention give us time for pictures!) so we were thinking the ceremony should begin at 5:00. Is that too early? Too late? I'd love some advice, especially from the married ladies on the board. Thank you!

Re: Ceremony start time?

  • I'd say 4:30pm.  Often ceremonies start 5-15 minutes late (sometimes 30) and it gives you some wiggle room.  Even if it starts immediately at 4:30pm, the civil ceremony might go for 15 minutes, then people linger for a bit, and then head over.  So let's say they leave at 5pm, it gives them a bit of time to drive over - also, to get on base, they'll have to show ID, so it gives a bit of time for all that.  Even if they show up 15 minutes early, I'm sure the O-Club will be able to accomodate them.

  • I agree 4:30 is probably a good time, because as PP said, weddings usually start late because you are waiting on those people to get in their seats and people like to talk after the ceremony.  There is usually no problem with guests finding things to do while waiting for the cocktail hour to start so it's no problem if you have extra time.

  • I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I agree. Then that gives you a good amount of time for photos too.

  • Additionally, it's an old wive's tale that it's good luck to start the ceremony at the bottom of the clock (e.g. 4:30 or 3:30).
