Reception Location Ideas

Hi there!  I'm planning a Lansing-area wedding from halfway across the country, so I thought I would reach out and see if anyone has any suggestions for reception locations.  We are planning a May/June 2013 wedding for approximately 125-150 people and I'd like a venue where we could bring in our own caterer (or the in-house food needs to be really good).

I'm already planning to visit:
Grand Loft in Grand Ledge
Perspective2 in Old Town Lansing
Woldumar Nature Center
Troppos Restaurant in Lansing

Are there any other barn-type venues in the area?  Or funky lofts?  I'm looking for something unique.  I know there are some nice barns around the state (Ann Arbor, etc) but we really need it to be within about 30 mintues of the Capitol in Lansing.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Re: Reception Location Ideas

  • The Opera House in Grand Ledge is pretty too, and you can bring in your own food.  I just don't think it is as "unique" as what you're looking for.

We looked into Perspective2 and for what they offered the prices seemed astronomical.
  • Yeah, pretty much all of FI's friends have been married at the Opera House, so we are looking for something a little different.

I'm hesitant about Perspective2 since it looks like the base rental fee is $2000-$4000.  We are planning on a Saturday evening wedding in prime wedding season so I'm sure it will be closer to the $4K mark.  Yikes!  Since the options seem so limited I figured I might as well go check it out.

Given all the political stuff that goes on in Lasing I'm really surprised there aren't more options for event rental locations.  Anyone know where all the political folks hold their events?
  • I think most business/political events are held at hotels and traditional banquet type event facilities.  Doesn't sound like what you're looking for.  I know the number of options for self-catering or using an off site caterer are really limited.

  • GRAND LEDGE COUNTRY CLUB!! We LOVED it there. You can bring in your own food,  beer, wine ect... GREAT Price and very pretty inside with the windows looking out to the golf course.
    Check it out. :)
  • I don't have any personal experience with Perspective2 but two friends of mine both are planning their weddings there and its been a nightmare for them.  Both of them say they are very personable, but everything has been a battle and they aren't giving them time to get things together before hand without charging them A LOT of money.
I'd ask A LOT of questions of them if you do decide to go with them.

  • Thanks for the heads up.  That's actually the second time I've heard that complaint about Perspective2.  I'm going to meet with them, but I suspect we will end up going with a different place.

I used to do work with Perspective 2 and wouldn't recommend it to anybody. The layout is awkward, the floors are squeaky, it's at street level so all the barflies can peer in, and the owner is a hovering control freak. And the price you listed is more than triple what it would have been a few years ago. I'd pass.
  • Thanks for the heads up ladies.  That's not the first time I've heard that complaint about Perspective2.  It seems really overpriced and given the negative reviews about the customer service I'm not sure I'll even waste time going to look at the location.
  • I'm using Grandloft, and have found it very reasonably priced because it also includes a DJ. The concern is that it doesn't have a kitchen only a prep area, so your cater should be a mobile one. The price is around 2000 dollars and Joe is very nice to work with so far. My wedding is in September 2012, and the place looks great.
  • I'd also recommend Lakeview Banquet Center / Morton's Fine Catering.  We're not having our reception there because they're a little too far away for us, but I've been there for other events and had great experiences. Its a old restaurant building on Round Lake with an interesting history (ties to the mob, etc). They are first a catering business, second an event space, so while you can't bring in an outside caterer, their food is great!  They've got beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces.
