Hiya Mrs Cons!!

I had just logged off the NC-OBX board when your hubby was talking to me in WoW and told me you frequented and was a super-duper admin on here. So I was back lurking and saw this! *lol*

So ok... about me..

I'm Melissa, 32, got engaged on Valentine's day, 2010 to my wonderful soulmate Steven after dating for almost 3 years. We're just booked out beach house, Park Place in Nags head from April 30th, 2011 through May 7th, 2011. We're planning a wedding for Tuesday May, 3rd, on the beach in front of the house. We're then going to have a reception at the house after and just enjoy it as a vacation with family and friends.

Outside of the wedding stuff, I'm a avid video gamer and movie buff. Love to travel and explore but have a fear of heights. I'm also what you call a foodie. I love to cook, experiment and develop new recipes. I'm also a fan of finding the new or weird places for lunch and dinner. I enjoy a good conversation, I tried to bring out the humor in most situations.

I'm currently unemployed due to moving to North Carolina w/ Steven. He got a new position and we were moved south for work. So I have a few friends here, but most are back in PIttsburgh, PA, along with family. Prior to this, I was a project manager for a large financial firm in Pittsburgh, PA.

Oh, and the name Missdys.... It was an old nickname from when was younger... I was known as Miss Dysfunctional... Some people think I'm mental or something. I mean you go and throw skittles at people on the street one time while shouting TASTE THE RAINBOW, and you're tagged for life.

So that's it for me at the moment... I'll be sure to start speaking up more over here. Its good to know people.

Yay! Hi!

The baby is eating...again, so I'm still here.

You know, for the longest time in game I didn't know you were female. And every time B told me, I was surprised and then remembered.

Were you aware that we moved to Little Rock for B's job? So I hear ya on the moving south thing. He's been looking for jobs up north, so hopefull he'll get something and we can move soon!

I don't know anything about NC geography, but there are a few cool chicks on here that are from NC...have no idea if they're near you, though.

lol to the skittles story! I have a feeling that you'll fit in just fine around here.

Well, Em is done snacking and I have a feeling she'll be hungry again in an hour, so I'm going to try to get some sleep. Stick around, though!

I recall that he mentioned that you guys moved, I just couldn't recall where.

I'm in Central Northern NC in a town called Oxford. Its about 40 mins from Raleigh/Durham and 30 mins from the Va state line. Its really a middle of nowhere area, very rural. A big change from my previous work in Pittsburgh. I traveled to NYC, Boston, London, etc and now I'm lucky to talk to people that KNOW where PIttsburgh is.

So finding people near here, would be GREAT! I actually like it down south, I just dislike the general dislike of women in power. I mean I was pretty powerful up north and down here, I get the feeling they think I should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen... Not that I'm against it. its just I have a very strong, focused attitude and like to get things done. Whatever it takes and that doesn't seem to be a philosophy used around here...much. It is definitely more Gone with the Wind, "Tomorrow is another day!" attitude. From business to driving, it pushes my buttons, so I dive into video games and blow stuff up to relieve the stress.

hehe I get the guy thing a lot... most never realized I am female cause I never talked with the mic. I just blurt out randomness in the chat... then again, I'm pretty direct with people, so that may play into it too. But yea.. all female. my fiance likes it that way! :P

Also, I'm glad you shortened your name, because we already have a MissIntentional, and that would just get confusing. Thanks also for not being a "kate/katie" or "futuremrs_."

So what do you play besides WoW? H is an avid gamer as well, and he plays TF2 and Left 4 Dead online, so I can't relate to the games but I can certainly relate to the gaming.

Tis ok, J, she forgot me, too - and I've got 30-odd years in NC.

EDIT: As far as women in power, there are plenty of them, especially in banking, law and government. The Charlotte mayor happens to be from my college, as well Mayor Foxx isn't female, but he is a minority, so no, you won't find much Gone With the Wind in that town. Small rural areas do have a different vibe, but please don't judge the state by the small place you're in. Things do move slower there, because people like to enjoy what's going on, instead of missing life.

NC's pretty diversified - you're near the state capital, but Charlotte is probably the "melting pot" of the state (that's a bone of contention for NC). It's also one of the most beautiful states in the fall, and VERY humid in the summer.

Two or three (if you must count Wake) of the most talked about basketball programs are in the state, and two of the most highly ranked institutions in the south for education are there as well - Duke and my alma mater, Davidson.

Where you are gives you lots of access to places. Try driving down Highway 52 in the fall and stopping at some of the little roadside stands and buying homemade honey, local produce, and stopping at some of the antique stores. Go to Tweetsie Railroad if you want simple fun (and still have some "kid" in you). Go up to WV and go white water rafting on the New River; skiiing in WV or skiing in NC when they're ready to open Sugar Mountain.

Okay. Well, the tone of your post just seemed to perpetuate some southern stereotypes that seemed pretty far fetched. I certainly hope that you realize that most of the people in our state know where Pittsburgh is and do not have the idea that women should be barefoot and in the kitchen.

I really do welcome you to the board, but I feel like I should be honest and tell you that your post really rubbed me the wrong way.

Tell you what, you are more than welcome to come to my new town here in Oxford and meet the guys in the Ace hardware store who asked me "Who let me out of the kitchen." when I went to get a new mail box key made. Its on Williamsboro Street, in Oxford, NC.

Again, I realize this isn't ALL of NC as I now frequent Raleigh and Durham more for my shopping now. But you got a little town up here that seems to think its ok to act like this.

Well, it sucks that those are your experiences. I really do hate that for you. But you never differentiated your little town from the rest of the state. You made a blanket generalization that I don't agree with. All I'm asking is that you think before you make posts like that in the future.

Also, I think I got my cat, Simon from Oxford. He's awesome. So, see. Not everything sucks there.

There are small towns like that in several southern states. And it isn't all about women.
A big hint to getting along well in the south is to take it slow and easy - don't expect everything to run on a NYC style pace - it just won't, even in the bigger cities.

And yes, there are lots of NC'ers on here who were probably taken aback by the generalizations - myself included. I only became a "child of the corn" 2 years ago.
