Pizza and ice cream?

We are having a vintage feel wedding, and I want to bring that feeling into the reception. It is a small guest list of 80 people max. We are not having a formal wedding or reception, the only thing my fiance and I have decided on so far is that we are having an old fashion ice cream/float bar. With root beer and cola in glass bottles, ice cream, and then many sauces and toppings. We are trying to decide on a main food that will go with an ice cream bar, and most likely a candy bar buffet, and we keep throwing around the idea of pizza. If we had a heated serving thingy the pizza would stay hot and we could have many different toppings, including a veggie for vegetarians.. any other ideas?

Re: Pizza and ice cream?

  • My only thought is that pizzas take up a lot of space.  I'd estimate you'd need three slices a person.  That's 180 slices, or roughly 30 large pizzas.  You could stack boxes...but the ones on the bottom would get cold because they wouldn't get heat from the lamps.

    Have you considered pasta?
  • I agree with NOLAbridealmost, pizza takes up a LOT of room, especially if you are having multiple types.

When you say "vintage" are you talking about the 50's & 60's (with the floats, I'm making that assumption).

"Vintage" 50's and 60's food would be comfort foods like mac & cheese, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, roast chicken, pasta and meatballs.

The heated serving thingy you are talking about is chafing dishes. It sounds as though you are doing this yourselves in a casual manner, perhaps at someone's home or a rented facility. You can rent the chafing dishes and sterno cans from any rental facility. You'll want them for that many people, so the food stays appropriately hot.
  • If you really want something pizza like, I would do mini pizzas, like the bagel size pizzas or flatbread pizzas that would keep warmer longer.

What about foods that were traditional served at the old style diners or burger joints?  You could have hamburgers and veggie burgers, gormet fries and onion rings.

  • What about bbq? We are doing the vintage-Texas thing, and we're doing bbq. It's pretty cheap, too!
  • I was thinking of having some hot dogs and burgers too, maybe also pasta and salad?? For the pizzas my facility comes with a giant kitchen, I thi k if the pizzas stay in the oven on low heat and the serves are switching them out consistently it would work? Do you think pizza, burgers, hot dogs, pasta, and salad is a bit much?
