Anyone doing a destination wedding?

Got engaged a couple weeks ago and hoping to do a destination wedding next May. Feel kind of behind looking at everyone's done lists but also feel like I am stuck until my travel agents prices are up for destinations. Not sure if anyone knows but I am kinda worried about booking so early as to price wise for my guests. Wish I knew if it'd be cheaper later for them.

Re: Anyone doing a destination wedding?

  • We thought about doing a destination wedding but realized some of our family and friends we really wanted to be there on our special day so we decided to stay local... Do you have any ideas where you want to have your wedding? BTW Congrats and welcome to the board!!!

Thank you : That is the only thing that bugs me about doing it but everyone keeps telling me It's my day and not to worry about it. Surprisingly I have a lot of friends/family that have said they are excited for it because it will be like a vacation!! We plan to play a video and all the pictures at the reception. We have been to Mexico and Jamaica so were wanting to do it somewhere else. Was thinking the Dominican Republic but i have heard some bad things about their beaches. So then was also thinking the virgin islands like st. Thomas maybe. I'm not too picky and will probably go where my travel agent says is popular but also am hoping for a decent price. Sorry for my book here lol
  • I'm not having a destination wedding, but I wanted to comment on feeling behind. I felt the exact same way. I keep reminding myself that everything will get done one way or another!
Congrats and welcome to the board :)
  • Check into the Sandals resorts, IK a girl who did her's that way and loved it.

    And congrats and welcome!

  • I second Sandals. Plus, if you get married on a Sandals, I believe they give you the HM for free. Not 100% sure about the details on that since were not doing a DW, but something I've seen advertised a lot.

I have looked at a couple of their resorts and they are very nice but I am not sure but i think they are adults only. The most important part of my wedding party are my nephews and niece : But will def have to see if some allow kids. Thank you for input. I think the thing making me feel behind the most is that since it is destination I can't rind out prices or travel info still for a couple months. My travel agent told me August or Sept. So i will patiently wait :
  • Also feel free to venture over to the destenation wedding board... they will be tons of help too...

  • Have you thought of Miami or the Keys? When I was trying to convince FI to do a DW I did a lot of research on that area. I lost that battle  which is a bummer but we are taking our pre-moon there so I am happy about that. :) Plus no one in the family needs to worry about passports or the like.   There are some places I did see on line that handle DW flat out.

  • If you want to include kids, you could look into Beaches. Since they are the same company as Sandals, they may still have that option of the free HM with paid wedding. =) Good luck!

Thank you!! I am new to this whole blogging thing so I actually just found the destination wedding blog!!
  • Congrats! We're hm'ing in St. Lucia at a Sandals resort. We were thinking of getting married there but decided cost wise we would stay in the states for the wedding. With Sandals the wedding is free with a paid hm. Also kids are allowed in the wedding party but not allowed to stay there.

That is what I thought about the Sandals resorts! I would like our family to stay at the same place so no one has to travel anymore then they already have. Thanks!!
  • @PNUTBUTR, we are HM'ing at St. Lucia at Sandals as well! How exciting! =)

  • FI and I wanted to have our wedding 3 hours away from where we live to Cape May, New Jersey (this is where we got engaged) and spend the weekend there. However, we realized that a lot of our friends and family wouldn't be able to take the time to come, handle bringing their children, travelling the distance, etc. In the end, we just decided to stay somewhere a little closer (45 minutes away).

  • Congrats!!

I am recently engaged as well and new to the boards. Looking at posts and contacting resorts that I am interested in, I feel rushed to get a reservation on the books. This may also be because I plan meetings for a living. So far I have a hold on a date at the end of May 2013 at the Majestic Colonial. WIth a travel agent I have used in the past, she is gathering travel package options/rates for my guests. Contacting an agent may get you information quicker.

Since I wasn't sure it there will be kids or not, this resort has 2 properties Colonial that allows kids and Elegance which does not. Guests can stay at either and attend the wedding.
