Outdoor Camping/Campground Wedding?

Sooo somehow my thought of renting a large vacation home for all the immediate family (and having a small wedding on its propert)y has sort of changed into the idea of renting of a whole chunk of a campground, complete with a dock/grassy area and a boathouse to do an outdoor weekend long camping wedding...

Most of my family loves to camp!! And my guest list is approximately 40-50 people.

The campsite is really nice, I camp there every summer and the reason I chose it is because if I book the whole south camp (about 12 sites) it will also give us the south camp washroom and shower facilities sort of to ourselves (as most campers use the one closest to them)

This is sort of a loose album of ideas I made...

[QUOTE]Are you seriously planning on getting ready for your wedding in a tent?   Or a campground washroom? I'm very much a fair-weather camper.  I love the outdoors and don't mind a few nights in a tent (or even in the woods) as long as the weather is nice and I can wear comfortable clothing.  If it rains, I pretty much end up miserable.    I've never had to dress up for a wedding while camping, but I can't imagine I would find that very fun.    If it was a SUPER casual wedding (say, jeans and t-shirts), with nice weather, then I'd be up for it.  But you know your friends and family better than I do.

Actually the campground is about 10 hours from home for me, But only about 15 mins from my grandpas house! So I can do all of that there!

Also it is in an area that is quite dry and warm, Rain shouldn't be an issue.
As for dressing up...sundresses and sandals...thats about all I would ask for..

I know a lot of people are going to poopoo the idea - but I do know of a couple who did this.  It was such a blast people talked about it for months.  They had their wedding and reception at a local campground up the canyon.  They had a pig roast, homebrew, a caterer and brought in all the tables and chairs from a local renter.

Now the campground was about 20 minutes from the "big city" where the majority of the hotels were, so that's were all the aunts and uncles and anyone who didn't camp went.  Or if you were local to the area, you just went back home.  But the majority of the people who were the couples' age (mid 30s) all really did camp.  I was one of them!  We did not have to "get ready" at the campground because we started at our house where we just showed up ready, brought some layers for the evning and camped out.  You can still wash your face while camping.

She's a very low maintenance bride, doesn't wear make up, very beautiful.  So yes some brides could get ready with out a modern bathroom.  It's been done.  Not everyone goes for the professional make up and hair routine.

The wedding was such a huge hit with everyone, that the couple had a one year anniversary party that was more of a potluck but in the same location, people camped over for this one too.

So it totally depends on your crowd!  Remember to have access to non-camping lodging, proper food safety measures, and a rain plan!

If you do all this and host your guests properly, I think it's a great idea!

  • When is your wedding again?  I had lots of ideas with my wedding as well.  I usually had to sit on them for a while and do some pre-research before, I activated any of the plans.  Took us 5 months to actually settle in on a place.

I think since most of us would be travelling from 6-10 hours away and want to see gramps anyhow, Most would camp there 2-6 nights so it would be all setup, I would get 2 sites for the reception site only, community area..And string lights etc there.
  • I LIKE IT! I would do it for my own wedding if I only were inviting 40-50 people...not the near 250 I have, most of which are aunts/uncles/cousins on both sides.... I have been camping since I was a fetus and I would have NO problem preparing for my wedding in a tent. Besides, like you said, you'd have the wash/restrooms, which usually have showers, to prep in as well.  A lot of people keep telling me I should be more flashy and fancy because its my wedding and so on...Fancy for me is wearing a dress at all! It doesnt have to have frills or lace.  If I make it too fancy it wouldnt be very "me" or very "us" for that matter.  I say go for it! Do what makes you both happy! Sounds like a real party!

  • Boooo The campsite I had my heart set on isn't going to work out :o(
  • That sounds awesome! My friends would definitely love it, but a good portion of my family would probably go to a hotel. That sounds like a really good way to incorporate something really important to you two.
  • Im planning to do my wedding at my boyfriend's campground when the time comes. He had showed me where it will take place which is gonna be on a deck thats attached to a game room and adult lougne. Doing so will save us alot of $$$$. We did look at once place and by the time u pay for the rent and everything it was just waay too much for us. I can also decorate it my way too. Prob will mostly be free cause my boyfriend knows the owner of the campground for years haha and same with photography and such. If anything, it will be a small fee in using the deck and his DJ system for the music. Will be neat. I think its an awesome idea. I go camping as well and so does my boyfriend and the familes. So its in our background. I wish ya good luck on your wedding day and just have fun! Laughing
