WW ladies-2 protien shakes a day...too much??

I need some opinions/suggestions/thoughts :)

I usually have 1 shake (5pt) for breakfast, thats after 45 min on the treadmill in the morning. I just recently started going on in the evening too for 45-1hr. I was trying to kick things up since I have been yo-yoing up 2 lbs down 2 lbs for several weeks. I was planning on adding in a shake after my second round, thought it would have some benefits... cut my hunger in half before dinner(which is when im usually "bad"), another milk serving, and more protien, less carb. It would be 10 pt out of my 29 target though. FI says he doesn't think that I need the second shake because im not muscle building, im only doing cardio which doesn't break down muscle as much. Would 2 shakes a day be too much for someone who really wants the weight to come off!?!?!

  • Too much protein can honestly KEEP you from losing weight. Instead of 2 protein shakes, swap one out for an actual small meal, preferably in the morning. Something light with fiber and dairy, like some healthy cereal and yogurt, with not only fill you up but get your metabolism going for the whole day. the protein shake is still a good in-between meals dairy replacement though. Also, drinking plenty of water helps keep you fuller while keeping you hydrated, which also prevents excess tummy growls. I hope this helps!
  • Yeah I definitely think two protein shakes a day is too much. And I agree with pp - instead of the shake in the morning, eat breakfast.

  • I guess my opinion would depend on how much protein is in each of these shakes, and what else is in them (fruit, skim milk, yogurt)?  There are times when I have had two protein shakes in a day, because I'm craving protein since I've been lifting more, I don't have a lot of "dinner food" in the house, or I'm super crunched for time.  But 2 protein shakes a day, unless they consist of "real food" aren't what I'd pick to have day in and day out as a third of my caloric intake.

If however, it's skim milk and fruit, maybe spinach or some veggie juice that's in there with some extra protein powder added, well, no one here would be telling you not to eat yogurt and fruit or a salad after your workout as a snack right?  I think mostly you need to make sure that you're eating real, whole foods as much as possible.

I think your tactic of having a snack before dinner so you don't eat too much at or after dinner is a good one.  But it could be natural peanut butter on whole grain bread, string cheese, greek yogurt, or a small handful of nuts instead of always been a protein shake.  Just think real food and you'll be fine.

  • I was just making simple protein shakes with skim milk... no other additions.

Thanks ladies!! I'll try switching up my food routine!
  • Here's a good article on what to eat after your workout to give your body what it needs to recover.

Could you cut your protein shake in half, have half in the am with something carby, and same in the pm? I feel like that might be the best solution. :)

  • Like raisin bran or wheaties. A yogurt might be good. Would a peach be ok?
