Boutonniere/Leis

Which did you chose?

I love the idea of the lei's and the lei ceremony because it's a huge part of Hawaiian culture (which we have been living in for the past 10 months), but I also like the idea of a boutonniere on my FI.

I was thinking of doing both but don't want it to look silly... Maybe put the boutonniere on after taking the lei off in some pictures? I think the variety would be nice.

Has anyone done or is planning to do both?

I was thinking I would get lei's for all the guests (male and female), but have also thought of going with boutonniere's for the guys.

Re: Boutonniere/Leis

  • Since my fiancé is wearing a jacket I ordered him a boutenierre, but we're also doing the lei ceremony. I thought it would look nice for pictures without the lei and he stands out a bit from the guys.
  • maybe ask your fiance what he'd like to wear? That may help you decide faster. My fiance is wearing the Mei Leaf lei and then we're using a kukui nut lei for the exchange for him, I thought the brown with green and his lavendar shirt would look nice together :)
  • We went with Leis. The dad's, groomsman & DH all had kikui nut leis at the beginning of the ceremony & then we did a couple's lei exchange and then gave leis to the parents during the ceremony. After the ceremony the wedding party got special leis and then we gave our guests purple & green orchid leis.

  • I would just go with either boutonierre or leis, one or the other. I dont ever recall seeing someone with both a boutiniere and a lei.

  • Thanks for the advice!

Allison, I have to laugh when you say ask FI what he wants... I am not one of the lucky girls that has a FI that is super involved in planning. He's not really good at that stuff and keeps telling me to make all the decisions. *sigh* I did manage to get him to sit down for an hour and talk wedding with me which was a miracle!
  • we did both. Boutonnierre so that he had something on his jacket when we did pictures before the ceremony and then lei for presentation.     Later he took the lei off, but still had the boutonnierre
  • I also plan on doing both. Can I ask any of you how much your leis for your guests cost? I would like to do this, but I'm not sure I have enough in the budget. Thanks!
  • Destiny, I think that's exactly what we are going to do! Have both just because I can't decide and I want the variety.

DestinationBride, I got a quote from Maui Elegance Floral Design (they are the only ones that got back to me) for $21 per lei (for tuberose leis). That seemed a little high to me, I know you can get them cheaper at Safeway or Costco if you have time to pick them up. I'm not sure exactly how much they cost.

We decided to just get all of our guest leis at the Navy Exchange here on Oahu and just carry them over on the flight... they are only about $8 each from there. Not sure about other places.

    Hope this helps!

    1) We only had leis, no boutonnieres, but I think both is fine.
    2) If you're getting married on Maui, consider hiring Mary Ann / Ha'awina Farms to do your guest leis. We got about 60 leis from her, and she was definitely competitively priced. I could go on and on about how great she is, but I already have in the past. Here's the thread:

Here's her fb page, which you can contact her through: https://www.facebook.com/haawina.farms

You can tell her that Rachel and Kimmy sent you.
  • You can also try MaryAnn at Ha'awina Farms for leis...some of my leis for moms, dads and sisters are $8 each.  My 3 strand pikake lei is $25.  I can send you her information if you want.  Several gals here on this board have used her and I will be using her for my wedding in 3 weeks.

  • Thanks everyone for the information about MaryAnn. I'll have to contact her!
  • In my opinion, both look silly. If you find Maile a bit expensive, there are nice tea leaf leis as well that run a cheaper price point. Try find somewhere local for a nicer lei, they usually don't advertise and the best ones on Big Island run from garages. For guys, the long strand is usually nicer than the standard shape lei.
