Has any1 ever gone the local College (around DMV Metro) route to hire for music entertainment - Band/DJ?

What was your experience in terms of:

  1. Satisfaction
  2. Cost Savings
  3. Logistics

Also, how did you go about hunting down your musicians?

I'd rather not have to budget $1k for a couple of hours of ceremony/cocktail background music & $1k for 4hrs of DJ @ the reception - just saying.  Sealed

We have a friend who teaches at Peabody in Baltimore coming to play at our ceremony and he is bringing a student along.  I can let you know how it goes and provide contact information if positive and they are interested in more weddings.
Honestly, students are DAMN lazy.  I contacted Mason, GW, Georgetown, and American.  Not a single response.  And Mason has a list of students who are supposedly willing to play. We're using Canterbury Strings (out of Baltimore) for the ceremony.  The response and correspondence has been wonderful.  And much less than the other professionals in this area.  They're even learning a couple of new pieces specific to our requests.
    Posted by MSSJF
LOL i was afraid of that. I am a Mason grad too.  Bad rep for my alma mater.

I started with colleges and high schools and didn't get anywhere either.  I ended up talking to an orchestra teacher at TC Williams High School (VA) and she just started a group to play at weddings.  All of the performers in her group also currently play with the DC Philharmoic and they were great!  Because they are a new group to do the wedding scene - they are really reasonable compared to the ones I found in the area.  The group is Palladio Quartet and they have a website with pricing info.

I decided just to go with my ipod for the ceremony, but was seriously considering contacting colleges for awhile.  I'm surprised there hasn't been many responses....I still get college listserv ads ALL the time for tutoring, etc. (I'm a teacher).

Not college students but I have hired excellent  string players, Classical scores is the name of the group and you can contact her at 301-943-2068.
They did a great job at my sisters wedding.
