Just getting started, already confused!

Hi everyone! I just got engaged 12/28/12. I always thought I would have a long engagement, and I also always thought I was going to have a spring or winter wedding. Nope! My fiance and I want to get married 8/17/13. He is in the Navy, and this is our only opportunity to do it, unless we want to wait years and only have a very short time to plan.
So how to plan a wedding in only 8 months?? I've been researching and making contact to venues, some are just ridiculously expensive ($12,000 for a minimum on food??) and others are booked (of course)
I really only want to spend about $10-12k. My fiance and I are paying for it out of our own pockets. I want to do a lot of DIY things. My guest list is about 100-120 people. I don't really care where it is, Ann Arbor/Detroit area. Family comes from all over, Ann Arbor is perhaps central to some. There will be no honeymoon, at least not for awhile, so that's not going to be a factor in the cost.
I can envision an outdoor wedding in a large tent, with lots of strung lights and classic "summer" wedding. Unfortunately, Stoney Creek Metropark is booked through this summer. Any other venues around for all outdoor? How much would something like that cost if you have to rent the tent, floor, etc??
I'm not opposed to indoor venues, either, but it would be nice if it looked decent inside! I really liked the Southfield Westin Garden Atrium, but too pricey!
Any suggestions are welcome! I'm basically planning this all by myself, since fiance has his duties with the Navy!

    Congrats on your engagement!

We got married at Greenmead Village in Livonia, near I-275 & 8 Mile (actually at the Newburgh Rd & 8 Mile intersection). They have a chapel that they say has a max capacity of 100, but I'd bet it holds more, and their banquet facility holds 100, but you can have a tent set up outside if you need it. They are not really well known, so it's possible they are available.

There's a link to their website in my bio link below, plus you can look at pictures on our photo link from the engagement and wedding photos. The nice thing about this facility is if you only use the banquet venue for, say, the dancing part, and set up a tent, you have a really nice bathroom facility, LOL.

Not sure what dates they are available. They supply chairs & tables, plus dance floor indoors, and have tons of picnic tables outdoors free for your use.

Livonia resident prices are a bit less than non-resident. You bring in your own food & alcohol. To be honest, with any outdoor site you will be bringing in your own stuff, and if you are interested, there are links to the rest of the vendors I used.

You can easily do this for that many people within your budget.

Happy planning! Looking forward to your wedding plans!
  • Congrats on your engagement and welcome to the board!

8 months is completely doable to plan a wedding in.  To help you stay on track (and you'll have a lot to do at first), I'd recommend using TK's checklist.  It can be found under the "My Knot" section.

Your price for this area is completely doable but may take time by researching vendors and really looking.  There have been plenty of recommendations from others here (check the sticky at the top of the thread list for reviews).

For all outdoor venues your best bet would probably be either parks or even campgrounds.  A warning though, tents can get pricey, especially if you are planning to have everything inside one (ie weather reasons).

  • If you can change your date to August 24, or August 31. Metrobeach is acail. I had my reception at their glasshouse (Thomas Welsh Activity Center and it was beautiful) ad right off the beach. Here is a link to their site:
