Day After the Wedding Conundrum (a bit wordy, sorry!)

Here's the issue:

Our wedding is on a Saturday evening in Cincinnati (OH). Almost all of my family is from just outside Philadelphia, so they are traveling a fair amount to make it to my wedding and will likely be staying the whole weekend. A few months ago, when the NFL schedule was released, I got an ECSTATIC email from my cousin, who is one of my BMs. She is a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and as it turns out, the Steelers play in Cincinnati on Sunday, 10/21. It is a night game. She, her husband, and two of my other cousins got tickets to go to the game. "No problem", I says, since I think it is great that they get an added fun thing to do wedding weekend.

Fast forward to last week. My dad calls me to say he wants to get tickets since his longterm GF lives in Pittsburgh and they think it would be fun to go to the game and tailgate with my cousins. He wants to get tickets for me and FI. FI thinks this will be a blast.

That being said, I don't give a flip about pro football. I have a feeling I am going to be exhausted. The idea of standing around in a cold, crappy stadium with a bunch of strangers for HOURS is not how I pictured spending the day after my wedding. FI is saying I should think of the positive, that it would be fun to spend time with my family and that it would mean a lot to my dad. Also, we are NOT taking a honeymoon, so that isn't an issue.

Am I being a total party pooper by not wanting to go?

Have you ever been to a pro football game? I am not a football fan at all, I hate how they play for 20 seconds then stop to move the ball and talk about it. That being said, I have been to one pro football game in my life and it was a BLAST!!! It was the middle of January in Pittsburgh and it was around 20*, but if you are bundled up you won't notice it because you will be having fun.

I have. My dad has Eagles season tickets. I have had fun at games in the past, but I just am not a football fan. Hockey? Baseball? I'd be there in a heartbeat. I'm sure we'd have a good time, but, I did not expect to have to devote the entire day after our wedding to a football game. :-/

Ugh, looking at that in writing sounds bratty as all get out.

I didn't vote, because I don't know what to tell you. Honestly, I will probably be completely wiped out the day after the wedding and wouldn't want to go to any sporting event, even one for a sport that I enjoy! (I've never been to a pro football game, but I'm assuming it's better than watching it on tv - the atmosphere in stadiums is what I enjoy.)

That said, I think it would be a great opportunity to spend more time with your family while they're in town and it could be fun.

I am completely biased because I LOVE football...like a crazy woman. However, I'm trying to put myself in your shoes and say it was a soccer game instead! If FI and my Dad were really into it (and we weren't going on a honeymoon) then I would want to spend as much time with my family as I could before they went home. Plus...I feel like every sport where there is family/comradery and tailgating before hand ends up being a blast.

On the other hand I could defiantly see wanting to take a day with just FI and myself of post wedding time. If you have maybe a day or two off of work that you guys can just spend alone then I'd spend time with the fam (and drink tons of caffeine) If Monday is back to work and normal life then I don't think it would be bratty to decline the tickets. Just weigh how much you see your fam/would quality time with them trump relaxing?

I'm not a football fan so I'd skip it. Honestly, the day after the wedding I plan to do as little as possible and maybe finish packing for the honeymoon since we're leaving on the 22nd.

I despise football and being out in the cold. I know I would be miserable so I wouldn't go.

My FI likes football but he says the professional games are too much. He doesn't like being surrounded by crazy drunk fans (he doesn't drink) and he doesn't like the cold.

Like Jenna said, hockey or baseball, I'd be there. Basketball even because its indoors, but football? NO WAY!

I'd go! Your Fi, your dad and your cousin are super excited. It's a couple of hours. You can sleep in on the Sunday. I love pro sporting events, they are always so much fun!

If it's a night game, sleep in as late as you want and you shouldn't be too exhausted. your family is coming a long way for your wedding, it would be nice to spend a little extra time with them.

It will be so much fun..and you will be glad you participated in an event that everyone around you really wants you to participate in....they came to your wedding...go to their game....I promise you will have fun....the atmosphere of a professional football game is like no other....dress well...drink heavy

I agree with this. I'm also biased because I love going to football games, but it just seems like a great way to spend some more time with family, and your FI sounds like he really wants to go. I'd probably give in on this.

I can imagine being in your exact situation. I am not a big football fan, but my FI is a HUGE fan. That being said, if I had the opportunity to go to a pro football game with him a day or two after our wedding I wouldn't hesitate a second. I LOVE making my FI happy and I know it would make him happy. Or maybe I'm just a pushover :P

I'd go, but I love football and the Steelers, so maybe I'm not much help. lol.

It is ultimately your decision, but even if it was something I wasn't crazy about going to, for me, being around my family and tailgating would make it fun.

Any other day I would say suck it up and go. However, I know I wouldn't want to go to a football game the day after our wedding. We have so much to do the days leading up to the wedding, and then obviously on the day of, so all I want to do the day after is relax (well actually we have to go back and clean up . . . but then I'm relaxing!!). Maybe football is relaxing to some people??

Being a Cincinnatian myself, I can tell you, that Steelers/Bengals game is the best game to go to. I've had season tickets for 3 or so years (so I'm already a pro football fan). But there is a certain intensity to that particular game - I will still be on my honeymoon, so I won't be able to be there.

But in the end, it is your decision - it could be your "gift" to your new hubby...

I say go, BUT if you do go, you have to choose your attitude and make it a positive one! If you don't think you can and you will be grumpy, let FI and your Dad go for some bonding time

Thanks for all the advice, ladies. I got my personal day (aka vacation day) approved for the Monday after the, which makes my decision easy. I will go enjoy the famnily bonding, a couple of beers, and the smile on FI's face.

Now that I know I don't have to go to work the next day, I'm looking forward to it a lot more!

I so want to go to that game. FI and I are huge Steelers fans and my parents and a bunch of my extended family are all Bengals fans. FI and I both tried to find tickets with no luck. I think we're gonna head to a sports bar or something to watch it with the family.
