Twins? (Not wedding related...just curious)

Ok, I have a serious question. FI and I are completely not planning a child until marriage or anything like that, but I'm curious. If twins run in your family, can that actually affect your probabilities of having a set of twins?

My great Aunt on my mothers side has twins. My great aunt and uncle on my father's side were twins. My Great grandmother on my mothers side had twins.

FI is a twin. And from what his mother says, they run in their family too.

Can that actually affect the chances of us having twins when we get married and start TTC? I've heard that twins skip a generation, but is that actually true?

I know this is nothing wedding related, and may not even belong on this board, but I was curious and I'm a Christian and I had no idea where to post this at.  Thanks in advance.

  • It can absolutely change things. You need to examine the patern in your family. For example: on my maternal side, we can trace twins back to the 16th century. Since then, our twins have skipped every other generation. (it skips mine unfortunately). BUT, on my paternal side, there are twins in every 4th generation. And of course, nothing is entirely accurate for every family.

  • Yes, they can change things.

    FI is a twin.

I have a set of cousins on my dads side who are twins and my grandmother is a twin.

  • So my chances are higher than say someone who doesn't have twins running in their family?
My uncle has a this book that traces back our family history to when they came from Europe and settled in this area. (supposedly, I don't really believe that the info is accurate though.) I will have to borrow it and see if twins run in the family lol.

  • If twins run in your family (or FIs) then yes, you do have an increased chance of twins.

  • Twins do run in families. On my maternal side my grandma traced it back and it skips every few generations. My mom is a twin.
  • I want twins so bad but it's not going to happen, lol.

  • I would LOVE to have twins, but they don't run in our families at all. :(
  • You know how I announced that my friend is having twins? Well, her husband had asked the doctor about their chances of having twins because he's a twin himself. And apparently it's rare for twins to have twins, so the doctor said "Not really a chance at all. Less than 1%".  They said you should seen his face when like ten minutes he did the ultrasound and low and behold, two heartbeats! lol.

I think twins are cool.  Last time this same friend was pregnant I had told my grandmother we were teasing her she might have twins and my grandmother announced twins run in my family.

"What are you talking about?" I asked because the only twins I could think of were my mom's cousins on my grandfather's side, whose twin-ness I've been told came from their mom, the wife of my grandfather's brother (in other words, not my blood relative).

Well then she proceded to tell me about like four pairs of twins on her side of the family who, while I never knew existed, exist all the same. So maybe I do have a chance of having twins. :)

Ryan doesn't know of any twins either... but his family is scattered all over the world and on a website that has some of the history of his family it said something about how they've always been quite fertile. lol.

  • I'm late to this, but I'm hoping twins happen for us, too! My mother and her mother have both birthed fraternal twins.
