Ireland or Italy in September???

Hi, I am new to this board.   We are getting married  on Sept. 25, and we are debating our honeymoon -    Ithe choices are 1)  Ireland/Scotland/England  or 2) Italy: Rome, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Verona,   OR 3) Eastern Eurpoe - Berlin, Prague, Budapest and Viena

Honestly - my concern is the weather -  I really want to do Ireland/Scotland/England but if it is going to be rainy and cold the entire time, not sure.... I've tried googling it but there are no definite results - it's weather and unpredictable - I've been to most of the above places but FI has not so I want him to have the best time (well...me too, but I want him to have a great experience like I have had)

Has anyone gone to the  3 regions above in late September/early October and if so, which one did you prefer?   Thank you - and yes, I realize my question is quite broad -
Thanks in advance!

Re: Ireland or Italy in September???

  • ive been to italy (rome, pretty warm; venice much cooler, florence perfect) in late sept/early oct and the weather is fantastic! and (see siggy) we're going again this year.
i haven't been to the others at that time of year so i can't compare. just a question about italy-why venice 2x?

  • Thank you!   My mistake - we do not go to Venice twice, it should be Verona - Thank you so much for the input, that really does help!
  • Italy in September is pretty great.  Still quite warm, and the rain hasn't started either.  I'm a Venice skipper, myself, but ya know, it's something you should see at least once I guess. :)  I lived in Italy for a couple of years and I don't remember a bad September.  We did go to Venice the first time in September and it was ungodly hot and muggy.  I LOVE Verona.  It's such a gorgeous city.  Just don't get sucked into the Romeo and Juliet stuff. :)  As an FYI, Pisa doesn't have much to see other than the tower, and it's kind of a tourist trap.
  • Thank you so much for the info -  yeah, I have been to Venice once before - but my FI has not so he wants to go.  Good to know about Pisa.   I think we are leaning toward Italy - I am all about great weather  - Thanks again
  • I agree.  The weather in Italy is perfect!  I lived in Italy for a year and I don't remember any extreme temperatures.  I agree about Pisa.  It could be a day trip from Florence or just a stop over for a few hours.  Nothing great there except the tower.  If you were planning on spending a few days there I suggest now going to Cinque Terra.  The views there amazing!  The area Cinque Terra, which means five towns, is connected through trails.  If you don't like hiking you can take a boat or train between them and still enjoy the amazing views.  The towns are very traditional and being by the water is very romantic.

I went to London in the middle of October and it rained the majority of the time.  I know it is pretty unpredictable there, but I think it rains more than it doesn't.
  • Never been to Italy,  but FI and I went to Ireland last Aug and the weather was ok.....rained a lot (but thats typical) but not like all day.....actually the weather made the drive along the coast even more dramatic!  It was windy and mild.....but if you are goin to go to Ireland...i would recommend summer or early fall.  I also have been in Feb and it was VERY cold.

Personally...i would try italy!  Ireland was AWESOMe but it was a lot of work (we rented a car, saw a ton of the country, stayed in a diferent town every night) so it was not relaxing at all.  You culd do the same in Italy, or pick an area and do day trips.  Depends on what you are looking for
  • I love Ireland and England, and have been many times- the weather in September is USUALLY really nice, but the weather there is very changeable- if you don't like it, wait a minute. It goes from sunny to rainy pretty quickly. Killarney is gorgeous, Ring of Kerry, Ring of Dingle, Rock of Cashel, etc.. in the UK Bath, Cotswolds, if you go to LDN stay on the Strand...

  • Thank you all.  We are leaning toward Italy  and no Pisa - maybe a stop-by - Thank for the great advice.

  • GO TO PISA!  In my experience, the only people who thought Pisa was overrated were those who just went and saw the Tower and left.  You MUST go inside the baptistry and the cathedral, they are absolutely amazing and will make the trip worthwhile.  I've been to Pisa twice and the baptistry and cathedral were just as beautiful as the first time around.  However, Pisa is just a few hour day trip, I wouldn't spend the night there or anything; just take the train from Florence, it's only an hour each way and costs less than 20 euro round trip.  Also, if you go to Italy, most definitely purchase a Rick Steves guidebook.  Rick knows everything and will guide you well!
  • I agree with pp.  Italy is fantastic in September.  I lived in Florence for about a year and September had great weather.  I second going to Cinque Terre.  The coast is beautiful and romantic!  There is hiking and a really nice beach in Monterosso al Mare.  I stayed in an apartment in Riomaggiore and walked the path.  There is also a train that takes you from town to town.  Make sure if you are taking the train you read about the proper way to validate your tickets!  There are little yellow boxes everywhere that stamp your ticket that make it valid.

Pisa is a nice half day trip.  If you get there early you'll miss the crowd.  Make sure to check if they are letting people in the tower on the day you want to go.  Sometimes they close it without warning.  Definitely go in the cathedral, baptistry and cemetery while you are there, you won't regret it.
