in Wedding Woes
from where i cheat:

you and dh are very good friends with john.  you and dh go on a trip with john and his girlfriend, jane.  you do not feel well and bow out of part of the trip.  later, jane sends you an email saying that she does not appreciate how you ruined the trip for everyone.

jane's behavior continues in this vein for some time -- gtgs with john and jane, sometimes followed up by nasty emails from jane, sometimes to you, sometimes to dh.  eventually you and dh tell john that you wish the two of them well, but you will not be spending any more time with jane.

john and jane get engaged.  jane sends you and dh a long letter, apologizing for all of her bad behavior.  she accepts all responsibility for how bad the relationship went, and for damaging the relationship between you two and john.  you and dh accept, cautiously.

john and jane would now like to be "couples friends."  they would like to gtg.

    john knows about the nastygrams, but not their exact content.
    couples friends = out to dinner, out on a daytrip, etc.  (etc. is non-sexual)

    I voted no. To me, once I've actually severed a friendship there's no going back. If I've actually cut someone out of my life it's for good reason and while it's great she's apologetic it's not enough to win me over.

    i'd consider getting together for a meal/drink if the apology seemed sincere, nothing more involved unless we were able to rebuild the relationship over time.

    i don't think i could, just because i don't know what is going to set her off.  having been friends with someone like this, it was just too much work.  constantly being falsely accused of random crap is no way to treat anyone, much less a friend.

    I think in this case, it'd have to be a probationary friendship in small doses.  One strike, and they're out for good.
